Topic: Feeling down right now

Hello my friends,

Today I was supposed to start Gemzar and Xeloda.  I did start the Gemzar and went to fill the Xeloda prescription only to find out my insurance didn't cover it so then I spent part of the afternoon struggling with insurance and trying to get my oncologist to sign some forms.  He had gone for the day.  It just beats one down.  Then I worry about my immune system because I'm so stressed.  I'll find out more tomorrow.

Has anybody had good results with Gemzar and Xeloda?

My prayers for you all,
Sophie

Re: Feeling down right now

Hi Sophie, Xeloda is sooo expensive.  Charlie has been on it for a while.  That and the IV oxaliplatin seem to be holding things stable right now.  Another scan to check in a few weeks.  When our oncologist proposed trying Xeloda a while back, he had his staff people call our insurance and I think he dealt with the pharmaceutical company that makes it.  Anyway, Charlie had to sign several forms.  I think we got it on "compassionate use".  Otherwise, we couldn't have gotten it either.  I know it's hard, but the combination of the 2 drugs seem to be showing signs of working better than just one.  Don't give up.  Do you have anybody that can help you and be your advocate?  Strength and prayers for you.

This is the combination that I've been on for the past 9 months.  It has shrunk the tumor and kept the cancer from spreading.

My insurance company had me change from getting the prescription from the drug store to mail order.  That saves them hundreds of dollars a month.  You might ask them about the mail order option.

Keep your chin up, Sophie!  I've been fighting this for a year now - it's possible to live and fight this disease.  I'm still working and doing (almost) everything that I used to do.

Re: Feeling down right now

My sister has been on gemzar and xeloda for 6 months now and it's doing the same thing.  Shrinking tumors and stopping it from spreading.  I'm so scared it's going to quit working, but she has very few side affects.  Extreme exhaustion on that 3rd day after but other than that, she's been doing good.

Lisa makes a good point too Sophie about the mail in prescription.  Charlie's Xeloda comes by Fed Ex from the Walgreen's specialty pharmacy in Oregon.  We can't get it filled at our local store.

Sophie,

What is your location? My mother slipped away last night and we may be able to give you the Xeloda she did not take, they are 500mg.

Re: Feeling down right now

Dear Patty,
My sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom.  It is so hard to lose a loved one.  I know you have many siblings to help each other ease the grief...lean on each other.  You are a very kind and loving daughter.
Peace,
Karen

Wishing all God's blessings!

Re: Feeling down right now

Dear Patty,  I am so sorry that you have lost your mom.  I am just so sad for you.  I lost my mom in 2005 from cancer, and I still think about her everyday.  I hope you have family to comfort you, but it still is not easy, is it?

Christina and Patty, what generous offers to give me your Xeloda.  What wonderful women you must be.

I have just found out that Blue Cross will make a one time override with Walgreen's so I can get the drug today.   Now the problem is that nobody has any 150 mg. pills of Xeloda.  I need 1300 mgs. in the morning and 1300 at night.  The pharmacist said he would call pharmacies in other cities to check so I am waiting for a call from him, and I will drive somewhere else if I can get it.  After this prescription is filled, I will have to go through mail order as you all suggested.

Thank you all for your information, concern and encouragement.  I always feel overwhelmed by the compassion on these posts.

My prayers for you,
Sophie

Re: Feeling down right now

Sophie....the Xeloda had to be special ordered for my husband, also causing us to have to wait a few extra days.  Sophie...a few days of waiting won't make much difference with the treatment protocol. Hoping for you to relax and relish the fact that things are moving in the right direction.

Hi Sophie --

Just wanted to say am thinking of you and I sympathize. Just getting through each day -- with this lethal timer over ours heads all the time -- is hard enough. But the days when you have to fight with the insurance company, with the appointment secretary, with anybody -- can just knock you down.
