Topic: Dad's chemoembolization
My father had his first gemcitabine chemoembolization on Monday afternoon. Because he is 86, they kept him overnight at the hospital. He experienced dementia that evening and yesterday morning, which we assume was from the morphine. He came home yesterday evening and is doing remarkably well. He got up this morning and showered on his own, has a decent appetite and is taking no pain or nausea meds. I know that the side effects can set in up to a week later, but I am so pleased he has done so well thus far and feel bad waiting for the other shoe to drop.
He will have another treatment on January 19th and then they will do an MRI to see if the tumor has changed. Since he has tolerated it well, I expect the doctor to increase the dosage or possibly try doxorubicin. She indicated the she chose the gemcitabine because she thought he would tolerate it better.
Please keep your fingers crossed that this thing shrinks.
