Topic: GGT/GGTP and ALT raised in blood test

Hi.....

Very strange question...... My husband and I had blood work done recently, we were applying for life insurance.  My blood work all came back normal.  His did not; the ALT(SGPT) is supposed to be 0-45 and his is 48, the GGT/GGTP is supposed to be 2-65 and his is 90.  I looked up online how to read blood tests and both of those have to do with your liver function.  He is on medicine for cholesterol, because it is quite high.

Here is what I found online-
AST, ALT, SGOT, SGPT, and GGT and Alkaline Phosphatase are abbreviations for proteins called enzymes which help all the chemical activities within cells to take place. Injury to cells release these enzymes into the blood. They are found in muscles, the liver and heart. Damage from alcohol and a number of diseases are reflected in high values.

GGT is also elevated in liver disease, particularly with obstruction of bile ducts.

Okay, so it totally threw me for a loop.  Am I just totally overreacting since obviously this touches a little close to home with mom's situation?  He has a dr apt in July to get his cholesterol checked again.  He just went to the dr in May and had blood work done and the dr said that everything was okay?

Re: GGT/GGTP and ALT raised in blood test

Amy,

When I started this whole adventure, and my blood levels were so out of whack, the doc's asked about cholesterol meds. They say they can screw with your levels too. I would not panic. I bet that's what it is.  Just give his doc a call and I am sure they will discuss it with you. (Well, he may have to call since they are his blood results).

Take care,
Sue

Today is a new day. Congratulations, you are already a survivor!

Re: GGT/GGTP and ALT raised in blood test

Amy....I agree with Sue in that I would think that the doctor will confirm the cholesterol meds leading to raised levels in the blood.  I know that all of us immediately become concerned about our levels considering we are so involved with CC.  I am sure that you will feel much better after the upcoming doctor's visit.

Re: GGT/GGTP and ALT raised in blood test

Amy;
I agree with Sue also. My husband is on cholesterol meds and his liver enzymes where elevated awhile back. I got really worried too. His Dr said not to worry since cholesterol meds can be cause. We asked my oncologist when I had an appoinment and he totally blew it off because they weren't that elevated. Also, last Christmas my 18 yr old daughter had liver enzymes 4X normal. I was really freaking out since they looked like mine when I was diagnosed. Turns out she had mono and that also can raise enzymes. Repeated them a couple of months later and were fine. I'd call his Dr and ask him to repeat the liver enzymes in July when he has his cholesterol checked. Then you can see if there is a change and discuss it at his appointment. God Bless,
Jamie

Re: GGT/GGTP and ALT raised in blood test

Hi ladies,

Thank you so much for your responses.  Makes me feel much better.  It is amazing how impotant our livers are, huh?  I faxed a copy of the report to the dr today and he will look it over.  Gary thinks that I am totally over reacting, but I am sure that you understand where I am coming from.  A few years ago I wouldn't probably have given it a second thought, but life sure has changed.

Thanks again.  It is so nice to have your support.
