Topic: Treatment Centers/Physicians

For those of you who would like to share the names of the physicians and centers treating you (or have treated you) this might be a good place to share the information.

Thanks a bunch,

Hi All, I am pulling up this thread again with the hope of collecting all the names of the treating physicians/centers.  This would allow new members to click on the link in order to find the specialist in his or her area.
Thanks a bunch

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

Thought to try it again.  Although, most of you posts (at one time or another) contain the names of the physicians/cancer centers it would really help us to have an easily accessible list.  This is one way to accomplish this.  Am I being a pest yet?

Live each day to the fullest

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

If you need to find a good oncologist and live in a small town far from any big cancer centers, I highly recommend asking every doctor and nurse you know (even socially) about who they would want  treating them if they got cancer.

I live in a town of 10,000 in central Kentucky, and that's how I found my wonderful, wonderful oncologist-- a nurse I'm friends with told me about him. (The one I had at the University of Kentucky cancer center was a gloomy, pessimistic, unhelpful dork.)

Peace, hope, and healing to all!

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

Mom goes to IU Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Attila Nakeeb was the surgeon who did her Whipple procedure and her hernia surgery... we loved him!
Romne Clark is her oncologist
Higinia Cardenes is her radiation oncologist

We have been so fortunate.  They are all wonderful to work with!  It is so helpful, because they all work together and keep each other updated on how Mom is doing.

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

My husband, Ted, has been treated by the following doctors:

Dr. Pawlik performed an 8 hour surgery on Ted, but a liver resection was not possible due to the extent of the tumor. He took out his gall bladder and performed a Roux en y to allow better drainage for the bile which has been instrumental in keeping his GI area functioning properly.  Dr. Pawlik is highly regarded in this area of surgery and has performed many successful liver resections.

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

My mother's surgeon Dr. John Brems at Loyola in Maywood, IL, was excellent:

Feel free to contact me if you have more questions about him.

I had done some research on other Chicago area hospitals and docs who seem to specialize in cc and found this information, though I have no personal experience with them:

Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Ross A. Abrams

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

I have not had personal experience with these but after some research, these two come up often as highly recommended when dealing with CC:

Barnes Jewish Hospital

Mayo Clinic
Rocheter, MN

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

Thanks Darla.  It would be great if this request could provide us with many more of the names of your treating physicians/centers.  Please, those of you who have not had the opportunity to do so,  continue to post your doctor's names.  It is my hope that in the future CC patients will have an easier time finding physicians familiar with this cancer.
Thanks a bunch,

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

Thanks so much Gavin.  We have not heard from you much.  That must mean that things are rolling along.
I am hoping for a separate categorie to evolve through the contributions of all members from this site.  It would simplify the search for physicians and centers.
Thanks and stay well,
Marion

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

Hi Marion,

Sorry I've not been around much, sometimes it feels like there are not enough hours in some days! Yes things are rolling along as you put it. More good days than bad, so right now I'll take that! Dad is still going twice a week to day care and has a new hobby, he goes horse riding once a week as part of the riding for the disabled program at the local stables. His day care group organised that for him. And he loves it! I need to get a new camera so I can get pictures of him on his horse!

Healthwise, things seem to be stable right now, so not much more to report there really. Good days and bad days as I said and he seems a bit better at dealing with that now. No real bad bouts of pain, and his pain killers seem to keep them in check when he does get one. No re-appearance of jaundice of any kind, but tiredness still a bit of a problem. All in all I would say he is doing pretty good.

As I said, a great idea for a thread to get info for this new category. Giving people easy access to important info at a stressful time in their lives is a great idea. I know everyone will be extremely grateful for your efforts as always.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, again!

Thanks and I hope you stay well also.

Gavin

Re: Treatment Centers/Physicians

My tests and treatments have been at the Goshen Center for Cancer Care.

My surgeon is Dr. Daniel Diener. Dr. Richard Hostetter assisted with the diagnosing surgery May 29, 2007, and he will pray with his patients who ask him to do so.

My primary oncologist is Dr. Carol Westbrook, and I love her!

My primary radiation oncologist is Dr. James Wheeler, and Dr. Brown has assisted him. They are caring men who both go to my church.

Dr. Michael Hall did most of the stent work (I have a stent in each branch and 2 stents in the common bile duct.) He serves at several area hospitals, so he is only at the Goshen Hospital 1 day each week. Seems to be the way some of the smaller cities get quality doctors when the specialty is not commonly needed. He looks Doogie Howser young, so I was tickled to learn that he is older than my oldest kid. He's very good at what he does.

The Goshen Cancer Center has its own website, http://cancer.goshenhealth.org/main
listing all the cancer doctors there as well as other caregivers in the Cancer Center. They take a holistic approach, with specialists in naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, spiritual help, almost any approach you want to consider.

I have truly been blessed to find such excellent care so close to home. When the pathology report came back after my hysterectomy suggesting ovarian cancer, I was referred to Dr. Gini Fleming at the University of Chicago Medical Center. My oncologist sent all the reports for re-evaluation, and they confirmed that it was NOT ovarian cancer. So I saw a specialist (I can't remember his name right now) in the adenocarcinoma/cholangiocarcinoma family. I think he expected to see a tired, listless, aging patient but was pleasantly surprised that I had so much energy and good memory/understanding of my health as well as good questions. He suggested I go home and enjoy life! The U of C Hospital is a teaching hospital. I don't know why, but I was seen there and never ever saw any bill from them. My oncologist, Dr. Westbrook used to work at U of C and was good friends with Dr. Fleming. Whether I benefitted from their friendship or if that is the way the teaching college tries to work or what, I don't know, but if the cancer returns and clinical testing is warranted, I'll be back there. They have a deal with some of the area hotels for patients coming from out of town. Because the hospital initiated the reservation, my friend and I stayed in a very nice hotel in downtown, with a great view of the city for only $69 a night. That was about 1 year ago, in August 2008.

Thought to bring this up again.  With all the new members coming aboard, the listing of physicians and centers will be extremely helpful.  Eventually, a separate, easily category will evolve from this information.
Thanks
