Topic: New Scan Results

Mom had her CT scan on Tuesday.  The tumor remained stable.  It was a bit of a shock since her billirubin dropped within normal range and she was feeling better and eating more.  The onc said that CT scans measure size but not activity and since she is feeling better and looking better, it could be that the tumor activity is lowered by the chemo.

As with everyone on these boards, we hope for shrinkage to be able to have surgery.  I think my mom finally realized that this is her new normal and she will have to be on some sort of chemo for the rest of her life.  The onc wants to do 4-6 more rounds of oxiliplatin/F5U and then just F5U as a maintenance.

Considering, mom has done really well on chemo.  Despite fatigue and some temporary cold sensitivity, she has no real side effects.  The only thing is that her bowel movements are so irregular that there are some days she goes so many times that she is wiped out afterwards.

She is living with me right now since her diagnosis in June and the onc says she can do the chemo in FLorida.  SHe has lost all her confidence in her independence.  SHe used to be on the go 24/7.  Now she is afraid to drive.  Although she would be living alone, she would have her friends, her card games and beautiful weather.  With me she has my family, but she is so isolated.

I hate Cancer. First it took my dad five years ago and now it is wreaking havoc on my mom.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Re: New Scan Results

Dear Lauren, you know that our favorite word is "shrinkage" but after that our good word is "stable". I think one of the hardest things we have to do as 'children' is the role reversal with our parents. You Mother has been at your house for quite a while now and I am just thinking, what if you were to go to Florida with her and stay like 5 days until she feels comfortable again. I forgot how old she is, but has she expressed what she would like to do? Now I will sound like Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof. "On the other hand", if the ONC wants to do continuing Chemo and you feel you need to be closer to her, would a move to a small apartment near you be more convenient? My parents lived in North Miami Beach for 25 years and when they reached their 80's I said they had to come to one of us 3 kids but it was time. They came out to me, bought a condo and had another 7 really good years. Sorry, I wqent all over the place here but the idea came to me as I was posting. Good luck, not an easy decision.

Re: New Scan Results

Thank Lainy.  I think she will stay here for the next few rounds and then do the "maintenance" chemo in FLorida and she can hire someone to help her.  It's so hard to believe how someone can go from fiercely independent to dependent in such a short time.

Re: New Scan Results

Lauren, sounds like a plan.  I think when you combine CC and Chemo it is easy to become "dependent" rather quickly. I know we try to keep up attitudes around here but sometimes I just have the urge to say,  "CC you really are a monster!".
