Topic: Wedding ring?

Question to all the widows out there.. What is appropriate etiquette on wearing the wedding ring after husband passing? What did you do? The thought of not being married is very new to me and somehow doesn't seem right to remove the ring.
Please let me know! Thanks, Alla

Re: Wedding ring?

Hi Alla, wear your ring as long as you want, there are no rules. You will know when you are ready to change "fingers" and if you do you can always use it as a cocktail ring. If you find you don't feel that comfortable down the road wearing it you can save it for a "daughter-in-law". Just do what ever you feel like doing.

Re: Wedding ring?

Alla....Nearly six years later, I still wear my wedding band.  However, depending on my mood I may switch to my right hand. With all we have gone through, etiquette in regards to the band is the last thing on my mind.  Follow your heart; it will lead you the right way.

Re: Wedding ring?

Alla,
I dont wear my wedding ring now.My husband has been gone for three and a half years and I dont remember when I took it off, after a couple of years perhaps...I just felt like removing it at that point so did so. My mum at age 80 still wears all her rings and my dad has been gone for 10 years AND she has a man friend these days.....so it is very individual really.

Re: Wedding ring?

Thank you, ladies. It definitely reassured my decision.

Re: Wedding ring?

Janet, my Mom still wore hers at 90, met a man, still wore it, but they both started getting dementia and couldn't remember who each other was! I know, bittersweet.

Re: Wedding ring?

Alla,

It's been a little over 4 years for me and I still wear mine.  I agree with all the other ladies.  It is a personal choice.  Whatever feels right to you.

Re: Wedding ring?

Hi Alla, I lost my husband on Sept. 14th, 2011. In December I broke my left arm and had to remove my rings due to swelling. Months later they still would not fit on my fingers so I had them made bigger this summer because I missed them so much. My physiotherapist said my fingers would eventually go back to their original size but I gave up! Maybe one day I will switch them to my right, who knows, but then I would have to have them made bigger again! Like Darla said above just do what feels right. We're in unchartered territory with no rules! Hugs. Nancy

Re: Wedding ring?

Hi Nancy, so good to wake up to your posts this morning. Just a suggestions about your rings....I have seen women wearing their rings on gold or silver chains and use them as necklaces. Glad to hear you are doing OK.

Re: Wedding ring?

Thanks Lainy.  After Doug passed I had a heart pendant made in Doug's memory that I wear everyday, so no room for the rings there right now but it is a good suggestion. Had our first snowfall tonight; if I wasn't still working might be a snowbird. How is Arizona? smile Nancy

Re: Wedding ring?

Nancy, it is gorgeous here. In the 80's, whichis not hot, evening gets cool now in the 60's as the desert gets cool at night, and always sunny. You are welcome to try it out anytime!

Re: Wedding ring?

I had my wedding ring sized to fit on my right hand. I plan on always wearing it in memory of Tom regardless of what my future may be. I just feel wrong not wearing it. I couldn't wait to get it back from the jewelers, I was so worried they would lose it. It's a personal decision and there isn't a wrong or right way of doing it. Just do whatever makes you feel comfortable.  Mary

Re: Wedding ring?

Thank you all for good advices. Mary - did you resize just wedding ring or engagement ring as well? I'm thinking to do the same at some point...
Thanks, Alla

Re: Wedding ring?

Alla,
I just resized my wedding ring. I actually lost my engagement ring years ago. I would take it off because the diamond would catch on things and then forget to put it back on. I think I swept it up in the sweeper. I have always felt bad about that. Best wishes , Mary

Re: Wedding ring?

Hey, Alla, one more thought on this that I forgot about. Teddy had a gold wedding band that he gave my daughter. He had wanted something in a platinum plain band. I bought him a titanium band for Christmas one year and I now wear it as a thumb ring. Perfect fit from a perfect love.

Re: Wedding ring?

I had my husband's wedding ring made into a pendant which I wear always on a  chain around my neck.  He passed in 2008 from cholangiocarcinoma.
