Topic: Prayers Needed for Dad

It's been another crazy day!  This afternoon as Dad was getting dressed, blood started pouring out from the sides of his drain tubes. He has been on an antibiotic for a few days now for an infection.  Once at the ER, it was determined that he needed to be treated at the cancer center and after talking with his Dr. he ordered for him to be transported to the OSU Cancer Center (about 75 miles from their home).   I am a nervous wreck and waiting to hear from my mom what's going on.  Mom said that he has turned very jaundice again and having stomach pain.  I pray that he is ok!

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Oh my goodness, Rena, I can't even begin to make a guess on this latest development. Just know that I am praying and anxiously awaiting to hear what is going on. Be strong!

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

It was a very long and rough night for my family.  They ended up transporting Dad to Columbus in an ambulance and he is in Intensive Care.  It's been a challenge to control his stomach pain and fevers.  They have determined that he has pancreatitis for starters.  His lab work came back all out of whack including his bile levels.  He is very jaundice again.  He is having a CT Scan done right now in hopes of determining what is causing the internal bleeding and to check things before they do any additional procedures that are needed.  It's a goal to replace his external drain tubes and replace his plastic stent with a metal one.  His drain has lightened up a bit in the last hour and less blood seems to be visible.  Hopefully this is a good sign.  But the blood that drained into his bags overnight was very alarming!

Thanks for your prayers & support!
Rena

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Oh, Dear Rena, I am so sorry. Sorry that anyone has to go through all this "extra" krap as if having CC is not enough! It sounds as though they have identified the culprit though and that is a good thing. From what I understand Pancreatitis is extremely painful. Doubling up on the prayers. Be strong!

Rena....I have learned that people with biliary tract disease have a high risk for pancreatitis.  We also have numerous reports on this site.  I am crossing my fingers for things to resolve quickly and sending tons of hugs your way.

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

And yet another stressful day!  Dad's bleeding intensified overnight. They managed to replace his drain tubes this afternoon.  During that procedure they figured out that the plastic stent had repositioned and was causing the bleeding. I sure hope they are right!  They will do a separate procedure to replace his plastic stent with the metal wall stent when they'd feel dad is ready!  He has been sleeping mostly since the procedure that ended late afternoon.  I hope tomorrow is a better day.  We are all exhausted from all the stress and worry!  It's so hard watching mom & dad go through all of this. I read a recent post that said this disease SUCKS!  I couldn't agree more!!!!

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Rena, I am so sorry for what your Dad is going through but sounds like they have caught the culprit. Proof once again that CC seeks out only the strongest and most courageous. I sure hope that tomorrow is a better day. Thank you for keeping us updated and I know it is 100 times harder because you are out of town. Be strong!

Rena...good to know that your Dad is getting some rest.  My fingers are crossed for a better day tomorrow and for the stent situation to be resolved.  Couldn't agree more with your statement about this cancer.
Hugs and good luck.

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Another curve ball....dad bleeding continued through the night and this morning his levels were dangerously low so he was given blood.  Tomorrow they will attempt to remove his plastic stent.  At the same time they will check for variances.  I searched postings on this topic last night and had already began to wonder about that.  However, when they said the bleeding was being caused by the stent...we went with that.  Perhaps it is both!  Regardless, they should figure it out tomorrow.  In the meantime, he still has not been able to eat because of the pancreatitis.....is that common with this condition....no food????  It just makes me so sad that he is trying to fight this and has not had a bite to eat since Saturday!!!  It seems so cruel....please share if this is the protocol???

Trying to stay sane!
Rena

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Rena, I feel so bad that your Dad is having to go through all this. I just can't help you with this except to send prayers your way. Not sure about the no food but anytime I have been on an IV I never felt hungry. I think if they were concerned about eating they would do something about it. I have a nephew who has chronic Pancreatitis and when he gets a bout he stops eating. I would imagine food makes it extremely painful. I sure hope you get better news tomorrow. Stay strong!

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Rena...esophageal varices can be banded off.  They do however form when portal vein is occluded which never is a good sign.  At this point I would not worry too much about his non-existent food intake, but would try to stay in touch with the physicians.  My heart is with you.

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Rena,

I am sorry your father is going through all this. I wonder if IV would be an option, as Lainy mentioned. My Dad was on IV liquids that sustained him for a while.  Hoping that he can get some much needed assistance with this. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

God Bless,
Missing U

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Finally some good news!!!  First of all, dad called me this morning and said that he had a bowl of cream of wheat and fruit in front of him! Yes, he can finally eat after his bout with pancreatitis.  He was so excited.  He was able to keep all food down today!  His internal bleeding is finally subsiding...there was very little blood today and his lab work all showed improvements! It was finally determined that a vein was bleeding due to friction caused by his previous drain tube.  If he can stay stable over the next two days, he will get to go home over the weekend.  He will have to go home with drain bags but its a small price to pay after going through the past few days! I plan to go visit next week and stay for a few days!  It will be great to spend another few days with them!

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

That's great news, Rena!

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Oh, Rena, that is fantabulous! Yippee! What a way to start the weekend. Thank you for this update. I bet you were overjoyed to hear his voice on the phone! Teddy had external drain bags and eventually even golfed with them. Have a great weekend.

Re: Prayers Needed for Dad

Dad is finally home from the hospital, but he is very weak and still not feeling well.  I was really hoping that he would get some energy back at least for awhile. It is really hard for mom to see him like this.  It makes me so sad when I think about it too hard.  Before he left the hospital, the hospice counselor spoke to them.  I don't think that either of them are ready to talk or think about that.  But the way that dad's health is quickly declining, it may very soon be necessary.  I plan to talk to them a little more about hospice during my visit with them this week.  I am so excited to see them, but I also know that it is going to be really hard for me too see dad so ill.  I last saw him early November and he was beginning to really feel the illness, but since has gotten much worse.  I pray for strength for my family daily!
