Topic: My Husband-Ken 04/23/60-12/27/2006

I have not posted on here very often but I have liked using this site as a guide to see what other families have been going through.

Ken lost his battle with Cholangiocarcinoma on the morning of Dec 27, 2006.  Ken was diagnosed in May,2005. He had had some left sided pain one morning which I thought were kidney stones (had a previous bout). His Dr said to do an ultrasound which was negative for stones.  Ken mentioned to the tech that he had some dull pain on the right side so the tech checked it out.  He asked Ken if he was a drinker because there was a suspicious spot on his liver. Ken was not a drinker. From there the testing started.  CT scans, PET scans, Colonoscopy, lab work etc. The surgeon here in Reno decided it was beyond his realm so we were referred to Dr Esquivel at Stanford.  Biopsy was done which confirmed the diagnosisod of CC.  The plan for surgery was to remove one lobe of his liver but when they got in there, they found a softball size tumor and 2 "daughter" tumors.  The docs discussed whether or not they should just close Ken up and let him be but they decided due to Ken's age and overall health, they did an 80% resection.  Clear margins and he recovered very well. They consulted with the oncologists at Stanford and suggested a 6mo round of Gemzar.  Ken tolerated the chemo pretty well for the most part.  In Feb 2006, with his last dose, they decided to do a baseline CT and then we would just follow up every 6months.  Then came the crushing news- the cancer was back.  Lots of consults with Dr's and they decided he would be a good candidate for Sirspheres.  Sirspheres worked great but on his 2nd 6 week followup- they found 5 tumors on the side that was not treated with Sirspheres. At that time, he was given 6 mo to live.  He lived every minute he could-passion for fishing so did lots of that-  Joined Make-a-Wish to be a fishing guide and took a 9 yr old boy with cancer on a fishing trip.  Jared's first and Ken's last.
Ken is so greatly missed and for the 1 1/2 yrs I was taking care of him, I thought I was preparing myself for the inevitable but there is no preparing.  Ken's death has been the hardest thing I have ever had to go through! I would not ever wish for anyone else to go through what we have been and I hope for more research and a cure soon.  You can visit www.hembree.us for his last days updates.
His loving wife,
Terri

Hya Terri- I  know how you have felt and are feeling.  xxxxxxx
lots of thoughts and prayers are being said for you and yours.

As Alans mom (see remembrance)   I also believe it is the hardest thing I have ever been through or will in time to come.
I think all of us on this site hope and pray that a cure will soon come to light. Even a more rigorous campaign and research programme highlighting this terrible type of cancer would be a step in the right direction.
one of the things alan asked for us to do before his death was to raise as much money as we could for our local hospice, even though he did not go in. The hospice came to us on a daily basis and left telephone numbers for day and night if we were in need. They were magnificent.

Terri,

What a wonderful person Ken must have been to fulfill the dream of a child as his dream was coming to an end.  Much love to you and your family as you go through this difficult time.

Terri,
My sincere condolences.  I viewed the Hembree's site.  It is a loving rememberance of your husband Ken.  I'm sure you will think of him when ever the song "Good Man" is played.  I'm sorry I can make it to his party.  Enjoy it as you know he would love to see you cheerful versus sad.  I wish and have asked my wife to do the same when the time comes. God Bless You and your Family
