Topic: MRI results...mixed bag

Went in for fluids since I am having bad diarreah again and talked to my doctor about my reccent mri. Results are mixed. The diffused area in my liver that they cant tell if it is cancer or not has grown. There has been no shrinkage in the large grapefruit sized tumor. Good news...the lymph node that was cancerous no longer shows up on the scan. There has been no spread and no new areas of concern. There is no cancer in the blood vessels that feed the large tumor which means there is a bigger chance at surgery. I will find out about surgery possibly next week.

The doctor also ordered an ultra sound with contrast to evaluate the liver again to check on the "diffused area".

My doctor sounded positive about the results and there does seem to be a possibility of another surgery. She said if I had surgery, they would go ahead and remove the Diffused part of the  liver.

I am at once hopeful and disappointed. I wanted shrinkage so bad. We discussed changing my chemo from xeloda to gemzar but she doesnt think we should change it yet, she wants to give it more time. But she does seem hopeful about surgery, which makes me happy. I am confused as I thought I needed my tumor to shrink before surgery, but now I dont know. I will go in again on monday for more fluids in an attempt to keep me hydrated enough so I dont have another week long stay in the hospital. Hopefully we will have word about surgery then. Think good thoughts!

I understand you didn't get exactly what you hoped, but overall it sounds like good news and Lord knows that with CC, we will take all the good we can get. I will keep thinking positive thoughts for surgery being an option!

Well, Kris, I did not hear the word "bad". So to me that is all good news. Hoping for the best for you!!!

Re: MRI results...mixed bag

Hi Kris;
I think it sounds positive if they are considering surgery. It sounds like you've got a great Dr. I'm sorry to hear you are having problems with the diarrhea again. I was having a real problem a couple of months ago (30 times in 14 hours one day) and the Dr I see for accupuncture had me start taking Guar Gum. It is a powder that is used as a thickening agent. I get it at the health food store and she now has me take 1 tsp a day. You have to mix it quick in water and take it because I found it starts to gel up real quick! It has helped and even though I am back on chemo as of Monday I have not gotten the diarrhea back yet. I can understand you being disapppointed wanting shrinkage, but if they do surgery they'll remove it all so that's even better!! Plus you have had the lymph node better and good news about blood vessels! I'm sending good thoughts your way and lots of prayers for even better news. God Bless,

Dearest Kris,

It sounds like you're on the right side of the fence and I am VERY glad to hear that the tumour has not grown, the lymph node is negative and no disease progression. Possible surgery. These are very good things. Kris, your CC is slow and your optimism (and mine for you) is grounded in fact, as well as hope.

I wish you a day of fluids, cold watermelon, peace and more fluids.
