Topic: Staging surgery and transplant dates are set....

Yesterday my mother got a call from the Mayo. While they had told her last week her staging surgery and transplant would be scheduled in 6 weeks      ( mid December) they instead scheduled it for November 24th! So we are only 3 weeks away from a potential transplant.

My 37 year old brother was chosen as her live donor so my parents, brother and me will be flying out to Minnesota the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Please keep your hopes up that her tumor has not spread and that she will be able to have the transplant. I think the scariest part is that we will not know definitively until the day prior.

Thanks for everyone's continued support on this site.

Re: Staging surgery and transplant dates are set....

Ashley,

I continue to be very happy for how things have turned out for your family.  Your Mom is in the best place and I'm thankful that she has made it through the protocol so far.  If you remember, I was doing the protocol at the same time, but unfortunately was found to have peritoneal mets during a laparascopy procedure.

I hope that everything goes off without a hitch for your mom and your brother.  Best of luck to everyone!

One other thing Ashley,

Have you checked out the Gift of Life house yet?  It's a great place to stay post surgery and you can even stay there right before transplant.  It's a great place and it might even save you a few $'s because it's only $25 per night.  I loved that place!

Re: Staging surgery and transplant dates are set....

I have some good news!! My mother was able to have her transplant surgery today at the Mayo in Rochester with my brother as the live donor. Both surgeries went well per our discussions with the amazing doctors ( Dr. Heimbach and Rosen) that made this miracle happen. My mom will have a long road to recovery with many ups and downs I am sure,  but we are headed in the right direction.

Of course, I didnt go through the surgeries myself, but I have to say that even compared to the actual transplant surgery, it was the staging surgery yesterday (to see if the cancer spread) that was the most emotional part of this entire journey for me.  We waited almost 8 hours for my mom to get into the surgery and get results that today would even happen. If you would like to follow any of the updates my mom has a carepage: www.carepages.com ( search: joanjackson)

I wish you all a Happy thanksgiving and thank you all for your support since I joined here back in July.  I think about each and every one of you on this board either fighting this monster disease physically yourself or the caregivers that have the emotional battle. I just hope someday there will be a cure. Keep fighting - it's all we can do.

Hi Ashley,

Your news is terrific and I know how you feel right now! You've had the two most amazing individuals working for you. Julie Heimbach was my surgeon and she is the most amazing person. God provided the best for all of you.

Keep in touch and let us know how everything works out for your mother. If you have any questions about the recovery etc. just ask.
