Topic: Pain Medication in hospital
My husband was recently hospitalized for his weakness and low blood pressure. He has not been eating because of the lack of appetite and, as most already know, food just does not taste good.
He had soreness across his upper abdomen and his urine was a little dark -- no jaundice yet. He went in mainly to get IV's for fluid. He ate a little solid food for his dinner, fruit and vanilla pudding -- just a couple spoonsful of each. Later in the evening he developed an excrusiating sharp pain across his upper abdomen like a knife going in him -- a level 10 pain.
After two shots of morphine it still didn't touch the pain. A dear angel of a nurse called the doctor and discussed giving him the drug called
DILAUDIN. He had a shot of that and it worked almost immediately -- he went to sleep right away.
Don't know how many additional shots he had during the night, but he called me this morning and said he had a real good night's sleep and didn't feel the after affects of the drug. Anymore morphine would have made him sick. Morphine can be given every 4 hrs., Dilaudin, as I understood it, can
be given every 2 hrs. Thought it was good info. to pass along. God bless all! ~~ Jean
