Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with heartburn and vomiting? My dad was hospitalized today because he has been throwing up for about two weeks now. He also has very bad heart burn. They are going to do some tests on him to see if he has any blockages. He has lost so much weight and is so weak. One of his doctors said it was from radiation which he had back in March/April 2009. Any advice or questions we should be asking would be appreicated.
My sister's just recovered from the Winter Vomiting norovirus which they thought, at first, may have been a stent blockage. There are some horrible viruses out there, which may not be initially related to the CC but the effects of which may be aggravated by it. I hope they get the problem identified & sorted quickly. Nausea and vomiting was difficult for us to control. We tried Prilosec , Kytril and other acid reducers and at times we felt to have found the answer with one or the other, but inadvertently vomiting and nausea would return.

Hi Dad's Daughter. Teddy used to use Mylanta for heartburn and it worked pretty well. Also for indigestion and heartburn he uses an over the counter fizz called Briosche. its a lot like Alka Seltzer but is in a blue bottle and I know CVS and Walgreens has it. Good luck and sure hope your dad is feeling better real soon.
Hi there Dads Daugher. I had the exact same symptoms a little over a year ago. In my case, the doctors first believed scar tissue was causing a blockage but it turned out a tumor had returned and was pressing the lower end of my stomach closed so the food could not go down the intestines to digest. I had a wonderful surgery that opened my stomach and havent looked back since. Lets hope it is not that, but if it is, there are ways to fix it.

my wife has had heartburn and digestion problems to, nothing seemed to help her until we tried a chewable tablet called SUPER PAPAYA ENZYME PLUS. They work well for her....good luck....lucille and ron
Thank you all, so much for sharing your experiences and for your prayers. Kris, it sounds like my dad is experiencing the same thing you did. We are waiting to hear when he will have his surgery (probably tomorrow). I will share your story with my parents -- I am sure it will give them great encouragement:-)
dads daughter....you may want to inquire about a (Roux-en-Y Procedure)

If it is the same thing I had and he gets the stomach reroute, then please let me reassure you that 1) it really can work and your dads quality of life will skyrocket and 2) recovery isnt that bad if you avoid infections. I think I was in the hospital a little over a week or so. I could have gone home sooner, but I didnt eat like I was supposed to (whoever thought hospital fish is a good idea needs to have their head checked out!) so it took a little while for my digestive tract to kick in. Plus my surgeon really likes me so he was a bit overprotective of me.
I am so thankful I had that surgery. I went from being a "sick" person to living a normal life. Please tell your dad that if he is getting what I got, he is very lucky indeed since it doesnt seem like it is done that often and instead people seem to suffer.
Please let us know how it goes. Best of luck if he gets into the operating room.

Hi everyone, I have good news to report. My dad did very well in sugery. When I left the hospital a couple of hours ago, he was resting comfortably.
Apparently his stomach was about four times the normal size and had been pushed off to the side by all the scarring and radiation damage from his original surgery a year ago (he had his bile duct and gall bladder removed and his small intestine was reconnected at the liver). The surgeon couldn't see the tumor but said the area was very packed in and he didn't want to disturb the tissue. Now we wait for his digestive track to kick in. They think he will be in the hospital for five days. Kris, I can't wait to share your feedbackwith my mom. I think it helped her to hear about your experience. I recommended that she check out this site for support. I worry about her being the primary care giver. We have a "spa date" on the calendar for Friday to celebrate our January and March birthdays. We'll see how the week progresses, and reschedule if necessary. I think she has definitely earned the right for some pampering.
dads daughter.....I am happy to hear that the surgery went well. Did the surgeon explain to you the procedure he performed? You are so right in allowing your Mom a bit of rest. Caregivers need to be able to take a break. I am enclosing a link pertaining to just that.
