Topic: Juniper tea

My mom was diagnosed February 2009 with CC.  She wasn't given much hope.  She was turned down for a liver transplant because the tumour spread to her lymph nodes.  She was initially devestated but bounced back with a vengeance to fight this disease.  She is drinking juniper tea daily that her sister prepares for her from the branches of juniper trees.  There are some local folks who were diagnosed with other types of cancer who drink this tea and they have survived their terminal diagnoses, including my aunt's husband who was given 6 months to live 3 1/2 years ago!  Anyway, I thought I'd share this as I didn't see anything like this on your postings.

labradorkathy.....cool name.  Let me guess; you own a Labrador.  Welcome to our site and thank you for sharing this success story with us. I am thrilled to hear that your Mom is doing well in spite of the dire predictions.  Besides drinking the juniper tea; what else is your Mom doing to keep this cancer at bay?  Congratulations.  We thrive on good news.

Welcome to the site. I would just like to join in with Marion in welcoming you here and to thank you for sharing this news about Juniper Tea. Good news is always good to hear! I used to have a Labrador years ago, a black one and he was a very energetic dog to say the least! I hope that you will keep coming back here and I look forward to reading more of your posts.

Actually, I'm from Labrador, Canada...lol.  Mother is still doing well but she doesn't understand her blood work very well.  She said she had a count of 36 today and her internal stent is not draining so she is back to wearing an external drainage bag.  She will also be starting chemo once again, first time since Dec 2009.  What is this count she's talking about?  Someone please fill me in.

Hi,

Could the count be her bilirubin level? Does your Mom look jaundiced? My Dads level is currently 294 but it was 419.  I'm from UK so not sure if it's measured different, Chemo can't be given if level is over 50.  Think normal level is below 30.  Your Moms stent could be blocked or she may have the start of an infection, has the doctor given her any antibiotics?

Hi Kathy....It might help if you were to find out which counts your Mom is talking about although, I assume it is the ALK PHOS level.  Today, Rick had given an explanation re: Liver functions test.  In fact, he answered Andie.  You might want to read up on it. It was titled:

Marion, my mom is eating healthy and drinking plenty of liquids.  The juniper tea is a once a day thing.  I just recently mailed her some dandelion root tea as I hear it thins the bile.  A few days ago she had pain in her side and the doctor told her that her liver was enflamed and gave her a prescription of antibiotics for it.  The pain went away before she got her prescription filled but she's going to take them anyway.  She is doing great and is enjoying life.  She's getting a portacath on Tuesday as she is due to start chemo again on Thursday.  Gemcitabine and Cisplatin I believe are her drugs.  She hasn't had chemo since December 2009.  I have no idea why they're having her start it up again.  It sucks living so far from her and not knowing exactly what's going on.

Kathy....I agree.  Being physically close makes things easier.  It is possible for you to receive the physician's reports?  I your Mom agrees then it can be done.

It's almost a year later since my last post and my mom is still with us.  She is actually showing signs of decline right now.  She is very jaundiced and has lost a lot of weight.  She tires easily and can't seem to get warm enough.  She is still in good spirits and is not giving up.

Thanks for the update, Kathy. Have you told the doctor about her Jaundice? It may just be an infection and that could make her weak, sick and no appetite as well.  Jaundice and chills are both common with an infection. I sugget calling the doctor as these things can be fixed.
