I've been looking through posts and have seen tylenol with or without other things as a help to side effects. Actually, all my docs tell me that tylenol/acetaminophen is really hard on the liver when it is compromised and should be avoided. Ibuprofen has its own downsides but seems to me to be better for my body chemistry for all that ails. Has anyone else dealt with this quandry?
I have always heard that Tylenol was hard on the liver. I take Ibprofen but find it a ltitle hard on my stomach so when I do take it I take it with a Tagamet or something like that and it doesn't hurt my tummy then. Actually my Gastro Guy never heard of doing that and when I told him he said that was a great idea.
I have been told by 3 different GI and oncology doctors not to use Tylenol (or drugs that are acetaminophen). One GI doctors made the comment that you don't give GI patients Tylenol (after I was given some in the hospital). I'm told to take Ibuprofen when needed.
THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG! I should not post if I can't keep things straight. Tylenol is what I can take - up to 2000 a day. Ibuprofen is what I am NOT suppose to take.

as long as you do not take more than 3gms/day,you will be fine.(that is 6tablets of the 500mg or 10 tablets of the 325mg. of acetaminophen.)
If you take Norco,Vicodin, Lortab ,Percocet ,Ultracet or any Hydrocodone or oxycodone with acetaminophen combination formulations for pain., then you need to account for that acetaminophen amount in that formulation for the total not to exceed 3-4gm total acetaminophen per 24 hours.
I take naprosyn 500mg once or twice a day for the pain and fever with FOOD. and I like this better than ibuprofen.

I agree with Percy, Kathy, don't worry about it. All information shared on this site has to be confirmed for accuracy with the attending physician anyway.

Ha, Ha, Kathy....20 lashes for you with a wet noodle or a soggy Tylenol!!!!!!! With all the info sailing around these Boards it's sometimes a miracle we keep anything straight at all. No biggie!! No apology needed! Com'on give us another one to mull over! 
Although the acetaminaphin products are hard on the liver, that's all I'm allowed to take, also. Up to 2000 a day, although I try to not take anything. All of my meds are acetaminaphin based. Occasionally I take a tylenol for pain but I avoid the oxycodone and tylenol as much as I can.
Walkingthepath: I suggest you ask your doctor/onc what they prefer you take. I'm not clear on why I can't take ibuprofen. Don't know if it has anything to do with chemo or if it's because I have a liver infusion pump and that's hard enough on the stomach. I have to take an omneprazole every day because of the pump.
