Just wanted to share that the Social Security Admin has put CC and liver cancer under a compassionate ruling status. This assures that your claim should be processed without waiting, denial or need for an attorney. You still have to wait the 5 months after approval to receive money. Bless everyone !
Just wanted to add that if you have no income at the time you apply for disability, you might qualify for SSI which gives you money each month until the 5 month waiting period is up. Lauren got this and it was about half what she receives on regular disability now.
Yes, I had hoped for that. However, recently I had no job b/c I was fired when boss learned of my cancer dx , I owned my own car which was considered property and that was an asset, so it was denied. Sherry
Sherry: you must have done something wrong. I own my own car and motorcycle, not to mention my mortgage. And I was approved first time. Check with a lawyer. Many of them will do the work for a fraction of your first check, which in my case wasn't even worth them bothering. So she ended up doing all that work for free. But you have to give them a blow by blow of your worst day. Not the day that you were feeling well enough to go to the store by yourself and walk from the parking lot, etc. But the day where you were so tired after chemo or something that you couldn't even make it down the stairs to your laundry without stopping for breath, etc.....
And you ought to talk to a lawyer about the firing, too. I checked into it, because I was laid off as soon as I had my surgery. The way my company laid off 11 people made my claim hard to prove. You might have an easier time. It is illegal.

I second what Kris said. Lauren owns her car and did at the time she applied. She also had money in her checking and savings. I remember the lady saying that the car did not count. The money she had needed to be under a certain amount and that was it. I don't remember Lauren having to give a blow by blow of her worst day. She had to list all the doctors she'd seen and a list of medications she was on. I think they verified everything with her doctors. Maybe it is different in every state. It sure sounds like it from our experiences.
I am pretty sure it is against the law to fire someone for having cancer. If it's not illegal, it sure is heartless. Sherry, I would check into the SSI again. All the best and I will do some digging on the matter.
