My dad was diagnosed in early September with Stage IIIA intrahepatic CCA. He completed two cycles (four doses) of gem/cis; however, his CT scan yesterday showed significant GROWTH in the four largest tumors. The consulting oncologist at the medical university recommended 5-FU with Leucovorin and Camptosar. Has anyone experienced this specific regimen? If so, what results did you have and what side effects did you experience?

I wanted to welcome you to this site. I am sorry to hear about your Dad. The only one of the three my daughter has been on was 5-FU. Hers was given over 48 hours. She wore a little fanny pack that held a pump and her chemo. I have heard of Leucovorin, but don't know much about it. I had never heard of Camptosar, so I looked it up and it is also called Irinotecan, which I know some people on this site are on. I'm sure others that are familiar with this chemo regime will help you out. With the 5-FU, Lauren had no trouble with it. I learned from a nurse at the hospital how to disconnect it and flush my daughter's port. It was very easy. That way we didn't have to make a special trip to the hospital. That would not have been practical since we are 3 1/2 hours away!! I wish your Dad all the best with his new plan. Please keep us informed as to how he is doing.

Hi Leah. I'm a new member too. My husband had a resection a year ago today but his CC has recurred as it so often does. He just started FOLFIRINOX which is made up of the three drugs you mentioned plus Oxaliplatin. Leucovorin is just a type of folic acid that makes the other drugs more effective and it has few side effects. The doctor said the other drugs all have side effects and that some people have particular trouble tolerating the Irinotecan (Camptostar). However, the regimen has been shown to be more effective than the alternatives in pancreatic cancer patients so there is hope it may also be more effective in treating cholangiocarcinoma. We were expecting some major side effects but, other than a little nausea the first day, my husband has not had any side effects so far. All my best to your dad.

Thanks everyone. We meet with our primary oncologist Monday to discuss a new treatment plan. Not sure if we'll got with FOLFIRI as recommended or if he will choose to go a different route with FOLFOX, FOLRIFINOX, or something completely different. For now, we're thankful for the good days we're enjoying between chemo cycles.
