Topic: How in the world do I get him to eat?

Hello Everyone! I am so glad to have Lee home now.  They put in two titanium stents into the tree of his liver for drainage and except for alot of pain, he is home and enjoying it. However, food tastes "horrible" he says.  He has lost almost 45 pounds since December. We are going to oncologists this Wednesday to discuss his surgery and treatments thereafter...I know they want to put some weight on him as I do....but he just can't tolerate the food....aside from making all his favorite meals...and telling him to just plug his nose...(haha)....it appears he is continuing to lose more....any ideas on getting the pounds back on or how to make eating more enjoyable?

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

Hi Heather,
Joe lost about 10 pounds in the last month and I think it was the jaundice that took his appetite away.  He has been so careful about what he ate, no meat, sugar, white flour mostly vegetarian for almost two years and now I just want him to gain his strength back. I just try to give him what appeals and small servings.  He doesn't eat much at once and he used to snack but now he just doesn't seem hungry.  The queasiness he has lived with most of the time since he was diagnosed in Juy 06 seems to be gone so that is great.  We are also doing lo fat becasue when he ate a high fat meal, he got really sick twice.  Gatorade seems to go down well and fresh fruit.  Eveyone's tastes are so different.  I wish you luck in your journey and know I pray for all cc patients and their caregivers.  This is a tough road.  We have had it easy until a few weeks ago.  You have to walk in the shoes to know what it is like.  God Bless  Mary Anne

My sister also lost 35 lbs in the 6 weeks after her diagnosis. It does help to eat very very small amounts every half hour or so, grazing not meals. When even this wasn't working the drs. gave her appetite enhancers (metase something like that, not sure) and that really worked. It even worked too well--she felt like eating and ate too much, her stomach had shrunk so much that it couldn't handle it. In any case, as the bile flows more, her own appetite has seemed to kick in also. Good luck in any case and here's hoping for good things only.

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

I get VERY sensitive to foods after being in the hospital. It mainly has to do with smells. I cant stand cooked food the minute the do something internal to me in the hospital and then for a couple of months afterwards. I might suggest uncooked foods or those without a strong smell. I ate loads of sandwiches, fresh fruit and veggies and yogurts. For some reason I could tolerate pizza and I ate that a couple of times as well.

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

Just remember that the key is calories, don't worry about what they are, this is not the time to worry about the food pyramid.  There are appetite enhancers such as Megace and Marinol, and if you are inclined, marijuana for medical use.  Small frequent such as Belle says.  even if you find just one or two things that he will eat and serve them over and over again.  I found that sherbet and malts were the best, now I can't eat those because of the oxaliplatin, grrrr!

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

I also had no appetite, no interest in eating although intellectually I knew I needed to.

My wife made me smoothies in a blender which worked pretty well for me.  My favorite fresh fruits, sometimes yogurt, sometimes vanilla ice cream (!), rice or soy protein powder (watch for constipation with these), spiralactone, and milk or juice base.   I could just take a little at a time but I could spread it out all day.

Even when I started to eat again I ate 5 or 6 small meals a day.   Find the foods that appeal to him.   I agree, this isn't the time to worry about the food pyramid.

Prosure worked for Dave when he lost 40 lbs.  He mixed it with iced coffee.  You can buy it on Amazon.com.  Hope this helps-Patrice

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

Our dr has never heard of it happening, but Scott swears he can't taste anything but dark chocolate since they put in the biliary drain. It happened once before with a stent that had slipped into the small bowel. He was a skinny man already and has lost 20 lbs.

I will buy and/or make anything he wants. When he can't eat, but knows he should, he drinks carnation instant breakfast. He also likes pina colada and strawberry daquiri drink mix in ginger ale, and fruit smoothies.

He cannot eat big or heavy meals. He has lost a lot of his favorite foods from when he had radiation last July/August and was so nauseated. I would be desperate for him to eat anything...... anything he threw up, he can't eat again.

Something that has helped his appetite drastically has been the marinol. It is a marijuana derivative that gives him the munchies like crazy. It's costly, but worth it.

I used marijuana to relieve nausea when I was on chemo and it did help with appitite as well.    Balance is important as any toxin in our bodies is filtered by our livers which are already stressed both by the disease and  by treatments.

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

If there is even one thing that he can eat, he should eat as much of that as he can, no matter how odd it is-- he needs calories. I had seven weeks of radiation and that made everything taste like burnt garbage, except (for some bizarre reason) canned refried beans?! So that's what I ate a ton of, and I'm still here to tell about it.

Sending all my best wishes to both of you!

Kristin

Peace, hope, and healing to all!

Kristin, you and my son would solve the worlds energy crisis with all the methane you must have released!

Re: How in the world do I get him to eat?

Actually beans are a staple of my diet and have been for years. Your body gets used to them if you eat them often, and it isn't a problem.

Peace, hope, and healing to all!

My mother has tried marijuana although everyone has different experiances with this it has worked well for her as far as appetite stimulant, give it a try.

best of luck
