Welcoming the new year in Scotland style! smile

Fireworks from Edinburgh castle! Surely no better place in the world to have a fireworks display from than a castle that sits high above and looks down over the city and it's people!

Feeling a bit rough and hung over??? How about a new years day "dook"??? This event has been taking place in Dundee for the last 126 years on new years day. This is footage from last years dook and bear in mind that the air temperature could be near the minus when this happens, so I can only imagine the water temperature! This footage is from the harbour in Broughty Ferry which leads into the North Sea!!!!!

Wow Gavin!! That is one great fireworks display!!!! Those people doing the dook are insane!!! That one guy in the yellow dress cracked me up!! You sure are a fun bunch in Scotland!! Just curious, what is your traditional dinner for New Years in Scotland? Ours is pork and sauerkraut. Take care and Happy New Year.

I really enjoyed the links you provided, Gavin.  Our friends in Northern Ireland take a swim in the sea on New Years Day too.  And a few people here in Chicago take a swim in Lake Michigan but we aren't among them!  Linda

Glad that you all liked the links! I love the fireworks each year so just thought I'd share them here.

The good thing about the dooks is that now loads of people who do them do it for charity as well. Maybe one new year I will get brave or dumb enough to do one, for charity of course! I guess Lisa that us Scot's are dumb enough too when it comes to jumping into freezing water! smile

We don't really have a traditional dinner as sorts for new years day, but many people go for a steak pie which I do love! Big chunks of beef, braised in gravy served in a puff pastry pie, with tatties and veg etc, nice! Yesterday the family was up at mums and we had home made soup, stovies and loads of nibble type things at night. Sort of party food etc.

And yep we are a fun bunch over here, or you could say insane as well! wink  Up in Stonehaven, about 40 miles from me, the celebrate Hogmanay by walking through the streets twirling fireballs around their heads!

Glad they were able to do it this year as Stonehaven was badly flooded the week before Christmas, about 4 days of non stop rain caused that.
