Topic: Double stent

I have my appointment next week to have my ERCP/plastic stent replaced. Over the last year I have had a few episodes of fever, chills and bilirubin going up which indicates an obstruction. I go on antibiotics as a precaution and it resolves itself and usually only lasts about 12 hours but there was one time where I was pretty sick and was in the hospital for 3 days. Because of this, the doctor is suggesting they put in 2 stents side by side. The doctor said to expect some pain.  My other stent replacements have been very routine. Never even know they did anything so I am a little nervous about this. Has anyone had side by side stents?

Re: Double stent

Suzy, My husband only had a single stent and later one for the Ureter which the tumor was pressing against. For both procedures he had twilight sleep and never felt a thing. Both stents had to be changed about every 3 months. I would ask the Doc if he can give you just a little more for comfort. I never understand why in todays time and with everything for comfort why anything has to be painful.  Not sure why they can't do that. Much good luck on the replacement and who knows you may not feel a  thing!

Re: Double stent

SW....I am wondering whether the pain is related to the proposed location of the stent rather than the fact that you will have number 2 stent?  And, dear SW, you might want to ask the physician about sedation.

Re: Double stent

Thank you Lainy and Marion. You are both so kind and caring. I am always sedated.   I have never felt a thing in the past. The doctor said the pain would be caused by stretching the duct with a balloon before placing the stents. I'm really not as worried about the pain as I am about having 2 stents and wondering how common that is, but I know the doctor is one of the best so I will try to stop worrying!

Re: Double stent

Suzy....good to know.  To answer your question, yes, it is not uncommen to have more than one stent for biliary drainage.  Good luck and please, stay in touch.

Re: Double stent

Hey, my mom currently has four metal stents- she had one put in a year ago, one in November, and 2 more in January (that are one on top of another). She never complained of any pain, just some abdominal discomfort and a little "tugging" feeling when she would take a deep breath at times. She also has the occasional blood infection from them...so that results in a fever at first, followed by a few days in the hospital with iv antibiotics and then all better! Good luck to you!

Re: Double stent

my mom has 2 internal stents and one external/internal stent.  The external stents are a pain in the butt.  Make sure you flush them with normal saline at least daily.  The internal stents become infected due to blockage. My mom has been hospitalized several times due to infection.  All this only after one month after clear PET scan. Can't understand it.

Re: Double stent

My mother has two external biliary catathers, they give her so much grief, need to be changed every 6 weeks under anesthesia. They leak for 5  days right after chemo and she's had them since March'12. Dr Javle doesn't want to replace them with metal stents since they get clogged easily. Life would have been so much better without them, they need to be flushed daily and the dressing is changed daily as well.

Re: Double stent

Thank you to everyone for your response. I had my internal stent replaced Thursday. The doctor said I didn't need 2 stents so all that worry for nothing!
