Topic: Bitter melon? And anti-oxidants ? Can you take the during chemotherapy

Dear all,

My father is finally starting chemotherapy tomorrow (gem/cisplatin plus panitumumab). I really hope he tolerates it well and he responds for a long time.

I have read the posts about bitter melon (everything counts!) and am wondering if it is ok to take everyday during chemotherapy?

I know that many oncologists don't like anti- oxidants during chemotherapy either. Any feedback from people here?

Wish us luck!

Hey Rain,

Glad to hear dad has started his treatment.  I am hoping Percy chimes in soon as i recently read one of his posts under C& AM heading.

What is bitter melon known as in OZ as I would be quite interested in learning more about it too.

Take Care

Re: Bitter melon? And anti-oxidants ? Can you take the during chemotherapy

Hi,
Is is also called the bitter cucumber, a green and wrinkle vegetable like the size of a yam or eggplant. It is a dish, you can slice one bitter melon into thin slices, get rid of the seeds inside and throw it away, do the same with chicken or fish in slices too. Start with a medium hot pan, add a couple tablespoon of coin or sunflowers seeds oil to the pan, a couple slices of ginger, chopped and chopped green onion,( one stalk with the whole thing chopped) add to the oil, stir fry till aroma comes out, then add the bitter cucumber ,stir fry for a couple minutes. Get then out, and do the same separately for the sliced chicken without the skin or fish, add oil and crushed garlic (approx half a Teaspoonful) to the pan ,stir, fry the meat until it is well done, then add the bitter cucumber back to pan, stir fry for a min, add salt  and/ or soy source to taste and served. Remember it is an acquired taste dish.  "black bean paste" available in most Chinese food section of many stores  and you can add 1/2to one teaspoonful with the chopped ginger in the process of of cooking the sliced bitter cucumber to truly enjoy it as a traditional Chinese daily dish.
Another easy way of doing this is juicing 1/4-1/2(depending on the size of the melon) with a couple stalks of celery and kale, 1/2 of a green paper .
If you do the juice daily, early in the morning ,like drinking  a glass of OJ, I do not see the harm of doing it. The dish, may be three times a week with the evening meals with brown rice . If you want to taste it first to see you like the dish or not, go to a Chinese restaurant and order a dish of "bitter cucumber and chicken with black bean source", it comes with white rice.
God bless.

Hi Rain,

I hope that your dads chemo goes well for him. My fingers are crossed for the best possible outcome to it and please let us know how he gets on with it. There are a ton of posts on the site about Gem/Cis and the search forum function will throw them up if you want to read them.

Hope it goes well!

HaHa Gavin I knew you'd get the humor intended. I think one day when you get over here we should all get together and have Percy bring his recipes. Then Randi, Derin and I will do our Jewish stuff. There is an old Jewish saying that we Jews love Chinese food as its the one restaurant open Christmas Eve. No offense on anyones part meant as compliments. Noone and nothing is sacred here if it will bring a little cheer. Kris you can bring Harley food and Pamela can bring Sauerkraut balls, Oy Vey I already feel a tummy ache coming on!

Re: Bitter melon? And anti-oxidants ? Can you take the during chemotherapy

Hi, Gavin and Lainy,
Just let you know, even I had the dish a couple days ago at the restaurent, I still cannot resist the bitter melon since I was hooked on that dish when I was little. So after I wrote the above, it made  me very hungry, so I went grocery shopping with my wife  and the rest is history.( I had two  small bitter melon , about half a pound, and six oz of sliced trout in my tummy now.) ,sorry folks.
But I promise if whenever we have a party in Lainy' house or her villa at the lake of Michigan , I will cook the dish right there for all of you.
God bless.

Hi Ilias,

It was quite hard to find but it is called bitter melon in Australia. We have bought way too much from a friend so if you need some am happy to catch up with you to give you some:)

Otherwise heard it can be found in  footscray  market or Springvale  ( basically Asian areas)

Thanks for everyone best wishes

Percy, I will be at the Lake house, believe me its not fancy but very comfy. It belongs to a dear friend of mine who hardly goes out there. She has 2 canoes and a bunch of water toys. It is about 1/2 hour from Lake Geneva. Oh and dinner will be served, More later. I like sour and spicy so I'm thinking I would like this  bitter melon. We have a huge Asian Market here called Lee Lee's. Its fun just to walk through it as the Fish Market in there is at least a block long. Percy you can come anytime and I will cook.

Re: Bitter melon? And anti-oxidants ? Can you take the during chemotherapy

Marion, rocket is a peppery sort of salad leaf, very tasty! Think that you guys call it arugula? Goes well with a nice steak!

And Lainy, I'm hungry again! Ha!! Now that sounds like a mighty fine meal when I come over your way! Chinese, Jewish and all other types of lovely food as well, you know I'd like that! And some chicken paprikash the following day perhaps! smile

Sounds like you had a good tea last night Percy! Trout is nice and I'm sure that Derin could rustle up some of them after one of his fishing trips for you to cook! Had chicken fajitas tonight, nice but not spicy enough! smile
