Topic: MRI results today

Finally got results of scan today, Liver looks clear however where the right hepatic duct was joined to the common bile duct there is a reduced inside diameter to     3mm in this area. this was noted by radiologist. I believe there is a nylon fitting where the two bile ducts are joined. does anyone know how small this opening can be  before it is a problem? My oncologist will be reviewing it later this week. I guess it is still up for review. does anyone know how two bile ducts are rejoined during a liver resection? thanks, Pat

Re: MRI results today

Pat,

I don't know the answer to your question, but great to hear the liver looks clear!  Hope you get a good answer from the oncologist.

Re: MRI results today

Pat....I don't have an answer to your question either.  You should be able to find it though in your surgery report.  If you don't have it on hand then you should be able to retrieve it from the hospital records department.  Fantastic news on the liver.  Please keep us posted.

Re: MRI results today

After my surgery while I had a piece of rubber tubing coming out of my side to a drain bag, when I was being prepared to go home the nurse yanked the tubing out and it pulled off this three way fitting that is designed to break off and become a two way fitting, that is what my onc. told me when I asked about it years ago, just thought someone would have some knowledge of this. Seems this sort of repair doesn't usually have to last so long most the time, scar tissue could also build up and restrict the junction perhaps ?

Re: MRI results today

Pat, got to tell you this Teddy story about tubes. When T got so sick we were visiting kids in Milwaukee. Because of an aborted Whipple (after a 4 hour surgery) a double e coli infection then the real deal Whipple we were in Milwaukee for 2 1/2 months at my son's house. Comes time to be released and to fly back to Phoenix. We were on Midwest Exp then. 40 miles outside of PHX. T turns to me and says, I am all wet. I felt the area where his 2 drains were and he was soaked. The tube had blown out of his stomach. I went up to the flight attendant and said, this is NOT an emergency and explained what was wrong. She announces we have an emergency is there a Doctor on Board. OMG 2 Nurses come to us (we were way in the back) and there was a young Doc across from me. So they stripped him and wrapped him in blankets and the Doc proceeded to pull out the rest of the tubing.  Ai, Ai, Ai!  I told the flight attend. to call my daughter who was coming to get us and then to call an ambulance as with an ambulance you get in the back immediately. The idiots brought him in the front! Where everyone sits for 3 hours. So Robin, my daughter comes running up To T crying, I am so glad you are home. T being T sits 1/2 way up on the gurney and says...Yeah, well did you ever see the movie "Airplane"? After waiting another hour I decided to call the surgeon in Milwaukee, told him what happened and that I have bags and can slap one over the drainage coming out. He said Get Salvatore the hell home and throw the bag on him! Done and the next day it was decided to just slap the bags on as the drainage was working in to the bag. Whew, sorry for the length here, but its one of my favorites! btw I DON'T THINK WE COULD HAVE FLOWN Midwest AGAIN.

Re: MRI results today

My oncologist reviewed my MRI this week and says he doesnt like the look of it. They are going to run it by my surgeon who is no longer practicing surgeries but he is consulting or something. He says there is no nylon fitting where the ducts are rejoined. there is scar tissue or something (eek) growing and restricting the duct from 7 mm to 3 mm where it is repaired. Dr. Pelley says it is a major surgery to do anything with this. The jury is still out right now. I lost a dear freind this week who I had helped during his battle with throat cancer. I have been asked to give his eulogy and I have been inspired by the kind words I read on these boards. I will let you know when the man who saved my life once reviews the the disc and tells us his recommendation.   Pat

Re: MRI results today

hercules.....You are the kind of friend all of us wish for; someone who stands by our side and supports us in the most difficult of circumstances.  It is a  great honor to be asked to deliver the eulogy, and I just know that you will do something good for everyone attending.
If indeed the scar tissue has to be removed then I hope it can be done with laproscopic surgery.  Possibly though, the surgeon may want to leave it alone.
As always, please keep us posted.

Re: MRI results today

Hello all....It has been a while since I have even  opened the laptop, a dear friend passed in june and he was the only child of a 92 year old woman who has had a rough couple of months, she is the sweetest old gal I have ever known. It is sad when you out live all your family members and you feel alone and scared. She has church members and a few people who care, one younger sister and they try, but Kay was a loving mother who never gave up on a young man with addictions.I am trying to help her sell her home, put a life time of nick nacks on ebay, all with a story  and tears. We all hope for long lives with most our mind and body intact and functional, but the sadness of the eventual loneliness is not part of our wish. I have been there for her, cut her lawn, spent time looking for a  retirement home where she wont be so alone and have others to talk to and do things with. Life isn't fair but we can fight for what we feel it could be. I guess I could sum it all up by saying God gave me people to help. God bless you all, I'll be back, my bile duct restriction is scar tissue according to my surgeon, so when it becomes a problem he says stent it, Pat

Re: MRI results today

Pat, Glad to see you back and filling us in.  You have been giving to others, as always. It does help us keep our minds off our own situations to be involved with giving back or passing it on.
...Scar tissue seems to flare up months/years later.  Just when you think all is done, there it is.  A friend with pancreatic cancer (4 years later no evidence of disease..NED), had problems with scar tissue blockage and had to have an operation to clear it THREE years after surgery.  I have had mild dilation where the surgery was which prompted the radiologist to say he was "mildly concerned."  My doctor reassures me it is a result of surgery/scar tissue.  Can only hope!
Thanks for updating us.
Be well.

Re: MRI results today

Hey, Pat, good to see you and know you are doing OK and you should be blessed for the good deeds you do. If more people paid it forward what a great world this would be. There is so much craziness lately that hearing a story like yours  really makes ones heart feel good. Thanks for checking in as your fan club was getting a little worried. I sure would want you as a friend in my corner! Take care and please let us know what they plan to do about the scar tissue. You are a hero!
