Topic: xeloda side effects

I just finished my 1st round of xeloda and was wondering as I am getting these red spots on my hands and a few on my legs & arms.  I know to use lots of lotion but should I be putting anything on the spots?

Re: xeloda side effects

I don't remember getting spots. I would possibly treat them with the lotion, and definitely call the doctor. Are they hot, sore, or itchy?? Do they bother you or are they just red? If they aren't bothering you, maybe the lotion will be what the areas need.
My hand and feet got red, but nothing els. Hopefully someone will chime in.
How are you doing on Xeloda otherwise?

Re: xeloda side effects

Kris, Most of them are just red spots.  A couple are kind of tender.  I am dong ok.  Was nauseated during the night last night.  I can't take the anti-nausea drugs cause I get constipated.  I was a little constipated last night too.  I take miralax 2 times a day & colace.  This is without taking the anti nausea drugs!!!  I have some hemp oil that seems to help the nausea and helps me sleep most of the time.  Yesterday was the 1st day off xeloda for a week.

Re: xeloda side effects

Hi, my wife do get those red spots with Xeloda.. they will turn to black colour later on (I think that's around 2nd 14days cycle)... yes both hands and feet... Dr said those spots will fade out after treatment stop.

Re: xeloda side effects

Pattymelt....Stool softeners before each meal might be helpful and tons of liquids.  At times we resorted to suppositories (Kris calls it her "bullets" to keep things moving.  Either way, pain medications will plug you up and this is an issue must discussed on this site.  Continue to try different things such as Colace, so that you can achieve a bowel movement.  Others may also chime in to help us out.

Re: xeloda side effects

Saw my oncologist today.  Everything is a go for my second round of Oxi/xeloda.
Another $650 copay!!  My Ca-19 is still really high but it hadn't risen drastically as it had before while on Gem/Cis.
I got a call later from the oncologist at UCI regarding my tests for being in a trial.  The tests were negative for the 3 mutations so I don't qualify sad  It was for PF-02341066, A C-MET/HGFR Selective Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor!!  Has anyone heard of this trial?
He said I could see about having another test done that would test 400 things to see about other trials BUT would cost $5000. - $6000!!  We are not in a financial situation to afford that!
Will pursue to see if our insurance or something could help.
Just have to keep swimmin with my Jesus floaties!  God is my Great Physician!!

Re: xeloda side effects

My oncologist said it is ok to get a flu shot.  Any comments about that??

Re: xeloda side effects

I had a flu shot last year in the middle of my Gem/Cis but I don't know any research behind it.

Re: xeloda side effects

Hi Pattimelt. These charges today are cwazy!!!  I start my Remicade infusions Sept 20th and my co-pay is 1200.00 per infusion! And I am in catastrophic  on my insurance because of so much this year. I can't even imagine what my co-pay would be if I was not in the high bracket. I have 5 before the end of the year so will have to start all over with a higher co-pay for the other 3.
I have not had a flu shot in over 8 years and have not had a cold or flu in that long. I attribute my no colds or flu in 8 years to Zinc. Sorry about the negative for trials but you will always qualify for us!!!

Re: xeloda side effects

I had a flu shot the first year I was diagnosed. They gave it to me in the hospital after my first resection and I got sick from it so I have chosen to not get one. I  wish you luck with your next appointment.

Re: xeloda side effects

I got flu shots both flu seasons so far, and had no problems.
For help with the Xeloda copay, call Genentech at 877-987-2487 and see if they can help. They got mine reduced from around $500 to around $250 or something like that. Still high, but better.
I'm sorry your trial testing was negative. Hopefully you can find another one that may use your biopsy results.

Re: xeloda side effects

Hi Patti,

Glad to hear that everything is a go for your second round of your Oxi?xeloda, hope it all goes well. And that is a mad amount of money to be asked to pay to have these tests done! Hope that Kris's suggestion is something that you could look at as that sounds much more affordable.

My dad also got the flu shot, recommended by his medical team. Here's a few links for you regarding flu and cancer.

http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/flu/

My dad also got a pneumococcal jab one year too along side his flu jab. He got them both at the same time, one jab in each arm!

Best wishes,

Gavin

Patty...as Kris has mentioned, Pharmaceutical Companies have compassionate use programs in place.  I believe that your combined family income cannot exceed $75.000.  I would contact Genentech (Roche) and Pfizer for Oxaliplatin.

Re: xeloda side effects

Thanks everyone!  I got my flu shot today.  I had one last year right before my diagnosis and I haven't been sick all year.  Cancer but no flu!
