Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Good article. People can be so desperate for a cure for themselves or their loved ones that they will try anything.....and no matter the cost. I think there are adjunct therapies that won't hurt but some of the things I have heart people try can be scary. I took care of a woman with breast cancer once who refused all traditional medicine for her cancer and did every cancer "cure" that she saw online or heard about including the coffee enemas. By the time she decided that it wasn't working it was miles too late. It was sad to watch and sad to try to help her at the end. I always take things with a grain of salt....if it sounds too good to be true then in probably it.
Just my thoughts!

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

I feel differently.

So far the medical world has failed miserably to find actual cures. And then, funded by Pharma, they tell you to pick your poison - chemo or radiation - both killing fields. And then they say "Trust me". I have heard those exact words and yet I can no more trust them with care for Lynn as I would an aardvark. Not sure why I picked an aardvark but at least I know they won't reply.

Who decided the terrible poison called chemo was the answer. Oh Pharma that's right.

Who decided what is important for a trial? Oh Pharma that's right.

Yes the Internet is full of hoaxes. But please tell me how many of you on this forum have tried to find something more than your onc has offered. Don't rule these out just because Pharma has not funded a trial.

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

I just think if there was a 'magic cure' then no one would have cancer.

and everyone would be cured.

and if Steve Jobs couldn't buy a 'magic cure' ...well, then NONE of
us can.

he had all the money and resources a person could have, and tried
conventional and unconventional treatments and in the end?

He still died.

I have a hard time believing that big pharmacy has no relatives (sisters,
brothers, wives, husbands, children, etc) untouched by cancer and
even THEY wouldn't want to find a cure if that was possible.

but i may be wrong.  smile

Very good point Dorieen, I have never heard it from that perspective before!

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Not sure I said there was a magic cure, just that there could be other options beyond the chemical world which has not proven itsefl after many years.

Sorry if your were offended. I'll post no more on this toic.

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Carl, no, no, no, don't ever stop posting on anything! We are an OPEN Board and no 2 people are going to think alike. I would hope no one follows me when it comes to voicing my opinion as my forte is not Meds, its people. One of the best things about our site is that people feel they can be open. Who knows perhaps what you stated will start someone thinking in an other direction. Love the Aardvark comparison!

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

If you have the time (lots) and inclincation, the book "The Emperor of all Maladies" is fascinating to read.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Emperor-All-M … 1439170916
It is about cancer; how it was described hundreds of years ago; Dana Farber and his groundbreaking work with Leukemia to the present time.  It helps to understand why some cancers are treated successfully and why so much still is to be discovered.
A PBS special will be presented in Spring of 2015:

These are some of the quotes contained in the book:

Thanks for sharing Marion.  I just purchased the book on iBooks and can't wait to start reading it.  I looked at the clip from the upcoming documentary and it looks fascinating - can't wait until the spring of 2015!

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

carl

i totally wasn't offended.

sorry if it came across that i was.

not even a teeny bit offended.

i still just think that *IF* there were other answers that really
worked--cancer would be cured.  that's all i'm saying. smile

I have not seen any alternative treatments do any better
(and sometimes they are worse at stopping the progression
of cancer) than chemo or radiation.

I know people who have LITERALLY sold it all to pursue
alternative treatments, and they died just like the guy doing
chemo.

I *personally* have yet to be convinced that ANY treatment
(conventional OR alternative) is a cure for many types of
cancers.  Cancer is seen winning the battle way too often
for my taste regardless of treatment options chosen.

And for whomever posted about Doterra, I'm laughing...
we have a bottle of Frankensence (sp?) oil from them.

Kyle still has cancer...darn it!  It didn't work.  (that is just
some sarcasm in case you can't hear my tone.!) wink

but really, he still does have cancer.

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

OH! and that's the new book our new Dr recommended we read!
how interesting!

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Hi,Carl,

You are a gentleman in expressing of how you feel about big pharma's inability to satisfy the need of the patients. Nothing need to say sorry for others and in fact you are not off the target that much.
Big Pharma are business entities and they serve their share holder's interest first. They do not operate on providing cures for disease, they operate on margins. And I know you may have known about this
. I ,at times, feel the same way as You do,even I know FDA has all those "fast tract or breakthrough status" and "orphan drug "pathway to encourage drug companies to apply for new drug application. so far for the last three years, FDA on average had been approved 25-30 new drug entities .and that was from the tens of thousands of new found polymers ie: small molecules to proteins from the labs ,going thru the evaluation process, then put thru animals studies,to eliminate down to only hundreds and go thru the IND( investigational new drug) applications from FDA and start the clinical trials ,by the time it reach the end of phase II, the chance of going all out into phase III may be down to just less than a hundred . And to completely become a new drug and then apply NDA and be approved by FDA,it will take for about a year.
In short, for a chemical compound or polymer discovered from the lab to become a new drug approved by FDA is between 7-14 years.
The fastest approval by FDA that I knew of thru an official of them was 6 months from start to finish and I believed the new drug approval was thru the "orphan drug status.
I am as frustrating as you are  in finding better solutions for your wife and myself and I understand that as patient advocates, we ,ourself have to do something of more constructive for this disease than just talking about it. Your answer in the other message about "going thru a new mall" is one of the best suggestion to solve the current problem about our web site.
You are not demanding the people and this web site to do this way and not that way to satisfy you,you want to help the people who will visit the mall later and have a more enjoyable shopping experience.you are a very considerate person.. You just suggest and explain your intention in a friendly and easy to understand way. This requires good communication skill and temperament to do that and in doing so, you only do not offend any body  but care about others feeling. For that I am grateful .
God bless.

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Sorry I opened such a big can of worms on this. I guess I kind of equate all the "cancer cures" out there the same as all the weight loss short cuts on TV right now....if they really worked we would all be a size 2 (tongue in cheek there). I just know what I have seen as the result of them. I do also know that like diabetes (which we deal with in our house too) there is no financial gain for these companies to cure either one of them. It's kind of darned if you do and darned it you don't.
But, it's not me with the cancer and I am not sure how I would be if it was me....
It has been a good and considerate discussion too. I appreciate everyone's opinions and it's good to see things from others' views.

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

I agree with what has been mentioned.  This organization was built on the need of addressing a disease little understood and one that is grossly overlooked.  We have volunteered thousands of hours to further the cause of this devastating cancer.  We want answers, we want resolutions, and we want a cure, as does every physician and researcher I have been privileged to work with.

Lung, Colon, Breast, Pancreatic and Prostrate Cancer represent 50% of (potentially) fatal cancer diagnoses in the US.  Hence, we see where the focus is placed by the government and subsequently by the pharmaceutical industry.

About $200 billion have been spent on cancer research since the early 1970s.  As far as I know, the cancer survival rate only has increased from 50 percent to 65 percent today.

Medicine is a business and we are the pawns in this business.  To bring a new drug to the market approximately 1 billion dollars have been spent and 5 to 7 years have elapsed.

More than 90% of all drugs will not make it to the market.

Having said that, like everyone else we are frustrated with the system, how we develop drugs, and how much money is made for those benefitting from the financial gain.

Researchers can identify cells or pathways, but eventually it will take drugs to prove the response of the cancerous cells.  Institutional Medical Researchers don’t develop drugs – Pharma does.

Clinical Trials have to be conducted in order to prove that patients can tolerate the drug (toxicity) Phase I. Phase II is to prove the patient response in a larger control group (generally 80 to 100 patients, Phase III compares the new drug to the standard of care.  If indeed a drug shows overwhelming positive response, it can be fast tracked by the FDA and subsequently be administered to the patient.  The greatest financial gain by Pharma is due to the off-label use of a particular drug.  In other words, a drug shows promise in other cancers also.

And, this is it in a nutshell; not a pretty picture for those not fortunate to be lucky enough to benefit from the positive developments.

It is for that reason that patients need to take an active role in their medical care.  Natural remedies may work, but have not been proven in clinical trials.  As noted, it requires millions of dollars and more in order to conduct cohort medical studies.  But, given the situation people are entitled to make choices and so they should.

Have we won the war on cancer?  No, we are not even close to it.  Will we see much in the next few years – I find it doubtful certainly concerning our cancer.

We are a small group in comparison to most of the other cancer hence, we need to stick together, work together, and if possible help each other in the most positive way  imaginable.

This organization volunteers hundreds and thousands of hours to this cause.  We are represented in the NCI, FDA, NIH and numerous other organizations.  We have helped bring this cancer out of obscurity by connecting those affected by this disease.  We started by handing out leaflets at major medical conferences (literally, Sara and I occupied the exit doors.)

Behind the scene the work is endless, but we are driven by passion and commitment with only one goal: to bring life saving treatments to those affected by this rare and little understood disease.

My two cents.

Hugs to all,
Marion

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Marion, I told my GI guy how he was a twin to Dr. Javle and I checked out that post of yours once again and I am just speechless, yes me, at the whose who, wow! I have one question though so I understand better and that is, can you tell us a little more in what capacity all these wonderful ONCs are aboard  for. Like is theirs a special Board or ONCs that patients/caretakers can contact for opinions?

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Good questions, Lainy.  The medical advisory counsil is supporting the organization in numerous ways.  For one, the majority of physicians are engaged in the NCI North American Hepatobiliary Task Force of which I hold one position in Advocacy.  This Task Force develops phase II/III clinical trials for HCC and for Cholangiocarcinoma.  In that regard they are furthering research into this disease.  Additionally, we receive numerous grant requests for research support - again, this is something we will look to the advisors for. We are in the process of setting the agenda for our first conference and expect several members of the medical council to contribute either in person or by submitting abstracts, posters or other material.  Things will evolve – we will keep everyone posted.

Given that all have a huge patient load, oversee their patients in care and clinical trials, submit abstracts, support clinical, investigate literature, develop clinical trials, attend and lead numerous, medical symposiums, it is unlikely for any to be able to respond to any of our individual question.  But these physicians and others are instrumental in driving research and/or applying their expertise to the patient community at large.

Doctors are in a precarious position in that it is difficult to answer specific questions without prior knowledge of the history of the patient. Hence, in order interact personally; patients will have to go through the normal channels.

Hope this helped.

Hugs,
Marion

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

Impressive, impressive, many thanks. I know you worked hard for this, like a year or more and lots of meetings. Thank you so much and even though you are about 2 inches taller than me to me you are 10 feet tall. I also believe that Bruce knows all that you do for CC and how committed you are and that you don't take to compliments well so figure this to be my last! LOL

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

What a great discussion and my thanks to all for everything that you have posted. And Carl, please do not stop posting on this or any subject! You most certainly did not offend me or anyone else at all with what you said. As everyone has said, this is an open forum for everyone and everything is up for discussion.

Thanks to Marion and Percy too for your thoughts on the pharma industry and the Foundation and also for letting us know more about the medical advisory council and the work that they do, it is very exciting! Sorry I couldn't take more part in this discussion, up to my knees in decorating, plastering and cleaning stuff!

My thanks and hugs to all!

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

I agreed, GREAT conversation to begin with and thanks too fir such informative and concise explanation in LAYMANS terms from Marion.  It reiterates Percy's point that we can't all just talk about the problem but action is necessary to help those with cancers and specifically this rare cancer. Problem is we're not all so savvy and educated in the workings of this complex world where business and medicine combine. I want yo add my two cents that just as there's big bucks to be made from traditional meds, many are making big bucks selling the natural or non western remedies. Marion's put it so well in that many alternative treatments might help but they need expensive proper studies to prove it.
Love and peace,
Willow

Re: Miracle cancer cures? Ask for evidence

i am using the Frankincense oil.  It is a pure essential oil & can't hurt anything.  Today I got a message from a friend that if you freeze a whole lemon & grate it all after it is frozen & put it on everything you eat & drink that it is a cancer cure because of the vitamin C.
