Re: interesting case I found

Wow, that is some beautiful story. We have had all good reviews from members using Chase. This is too funny but in my Dad's family there were a lot of Fox's and my maiden name was Hoffman. Not related to either of those just funny to me. Thanks for the story of HOPE!

I am with Lainy, that is a great story.....and Lainy you and I are probably related some how since I have Hoffman on my mom's side of the family...that would be too funny and explain why we have the same sense of humor.

Re: interesting case I found

Too funny Kris. My Dad's family came over from Russia and he was born here. They settled with 8 siblings in Wausau WI.  My Mom's side was Steinman and they also came over from Russia. Strange, but a cousin from Newport RI got hold of the manifest from the ship and they were listed as Hochman! When they went through Ellis Island it was changed to Hoffman. But who are we to question?

Re: interesting case I found

Okay well then probably not but still funny. Our Hoffman is from the Netherlands....true Dutch. But even more funny is my great-grandparents emigrated from Russia with 8 of their 12 kids....they went through Ellis Island too. The Russian Zakpylko was shorted to Zako. Then my grandfather didn't like that and since he was over 18 he chose Darby. So was have the Irish Russian....too funny.

Re: interesting case I found

Wow, well they all came from Russia. My Grand Father came from Minsk Russia and was a baker for the Russian soldiers. When he came home in the evening he would sneak in to the Jewish Ghetto with bread that was left over and give it to the starving Jews. I just found out on Google there was a famous Ghetto in Minsk. Wow I didn't know that. He got the family out just before the German invasion. Not sure where my other Grandparents were from it started with something like Bretzlikof..interesting.

Re: interesting case I found

Actually I say Russia as everyone always used that as a generic term because of the Soviet Union.....we are from the Ukraine really......not too far from Chernobyl but well before that was even built. They saw the writing on the wall and while they were not Jewish they did not like what they were seeing so fled. The unfortunate thing is not all of the older kids and their families came so some are still there. My stepmom tried to look for them but the records are such as mess that unless she wants to go hand search she ran into a wall. I actually hope to be able to some day.
They all settled in North Dakota, Montana area and my grandfather worked on building dams such as the Hungry Horse Dam in Montana and the Grand Coulee dam here if Washington where he met my grandmother....she was waiting tables in a cafe. She was first generation German.

It's funny how we all came to be where we are now.

Re: interesting case I found

Also Kris, the borders kept changing in that area. The Fox's ended up in Wyoming!
