Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi,  Carlos,

Besides ask the doctor to adjust the dose of both medications if not contraindicated to you mom's current condition if it is caused by edema.
Ask the doctor to check whether your mom may have develop DVT ,especially in the areas below the knees that may swollen,very firm and painful .

God bless.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Thanks for the support PCL1029.

What is the maximum allowed of aldactone and forusemide per day?

what is DVT? I just ask may mom and she feels some pain in the shin and instep.

I have to say that after being in bed for four hours with feet under pillows after lunch she has less swollen.

Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi,
DVT=deep vein thrombosis( blood clot around the calf,lower leg or thigh .)

Warfarin will take care of the problem.

Again ,I am not the doctor ,so ask your doctor to prescribe the adjument dose.

Maximum dose for Aldactone is 400mg/day mostly and furosemide is around 40-80mg/day. Both depend on the electrolytes balance of the sodium and potassium this balance is very important, therefore you need the doctor to determine the dosage whether than taking the matter on your own.
God bless.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Marions, PCL1029, thanks.

I´m very confused regarding swelling.

She compalins particulary of the legs and feet but i think abdomen is a little bit more swollen than normal.

And it depends on the days...

There are days when the bones of the knees and ankles can be seen and other days they are not.

I think to my mother swollen legs is affecting more psychologically than the disease itself.

Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi everybody;

After several weeks with the pills the swelling has gone down.

But in the last days(few days) she has weakened very quickly despite being in the week off of xeloda. More time in bed, tired face .. she is realizing that something is not right inside her because she wants to do things but...and sometimes begins to cry.

It is the first time since the weeks after surgery 4 years ago that I see her so weak.

We have oncologist appointment next Tuesday for the quarterly CAT scan results after 4 cycles of xeloda.

thanks for your company;
Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi, Carlos. I am sorry to hear about your Mom, I hope there is nothing new going on. Sometimes we can feel down when we are used to doing more and our energy level is not good and then it gets so frustrating. Please let us know how the scan turns out and I will be praying for good news.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Thanks Lainy.

According to him she feels like a zombie especially at morning. And I notice her confused throughout the day.

Looking at the prospect of aldectone(100mg) and forusemide(20mg) side effects speak about confusing and so on...

It must be difficult put in a balance side effects and swelling...

What is your opinion?

Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Dear Carlos, my suggestion, since I am not a medical person would be to call Mom's Doctor, tell him what is happening and ask him if he thinks he may need to change her medications. Please call him as soon as you can as there is no reason for anyone to suffer in that way. Also tell him about the swelling. Swelling comes with CC and is not pleasant. Please let us know what the ONC says. No one wants to be so confused as it can really be scary. Best of luck.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi Carlos,

Infection (amongst other causes) can cause confusion.  I would tell the doc.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Clarem, Lainy and everybody;

After the appointment with the oncologist;

Cat scan; the disease remains the same and the blood test is "normal" for this situation.

So, oncologist decision has been ;

After Christmas, continue Xeloda.

Keep taking forusamide (100mg) and Seguril (20mg).

As you know i feel my mum in the last weeks like a "drunk" person and i guess that is for diuretic pills (according to the prospect taking for a long time it produces confusion,weakeness ...)

Oncologist says it's more important to control the swelling...

What is your opinion?

Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Carlos...is your Mom swollen in her abdomen as well? Did the blood test include:
Serum ammonia levels and Potassium level in the blood?

Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi Carlos,

Like Marion I am wondering what the blood tests showed.  My sister was not 'obviously confused' but I am in no doubt she was subtely confused on some level - she had a vacantness about her too.  I never really got anyone medical to address it properly.  At times I put it down to morphine, at times is was definately due to infection.  Most of the time I could not put my finger on it.  I recently met a nurse who specialised in Hepatic ITU and she was in no doubt it was due to raised ammonia levels which the minute she said it made perfect sense to me.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Marions, Clarem, thanks for the answers.

I don´t know... Oncologist said nothing about it checking the blood test results and we din´t have the details at home.

If Amonia is the problem, what would be the best solution to achieve lower levels?

Regards and thanks again;
Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Carlos....you might want to reach out to the oncologist and discuss in detail his perspective of the current state of your Mom's disease.  Ammonia levels may have been determined hence, I would not worry about a possible treatment prior to this conversation.
Please stay in touch.
Hugs,
Marion

Re: Time for my experience and help

Hi again in this new year and thanks to all of you.

After one month from last oncologist appointment we have the next one this Tuesday.

Doctor will decide along with blood test results if my mom continues with xeloda treatment after a month break. Now she just has been taking diuretic pills for swalling.

My mother continues weak and losing weight because she eats no much.

She had a blood transfusion 4 months ago beacuse of anemia, before continuing with xeloda.
I dont know what blood test will result but it would be a good idea ask the oncologist for a second blood transfusion?

Another way to get strong?

Regards and thanks;
Carlos

Re: Time for my experience and help

Carlos have you tried any Nutritional Drinks like Carnation Breakfast or Boost?
Teddy liked Carnation vanilla the best and I would blend in a banana. And you can have these drink in place of a meal. Smaller meals are better. A patient looks at a big plate of food and they don't want to eat at all then. Small meals and what we call grazing at small amounts of food but all day. Soups are great, buttered noodles, sift chicken....what we call comfort foods. Best of luck it is a hard process to go through trying to get a loved one to eat when they just can't.

Re: Time for my experience and help

Carlos, there are protein powders and such you can add to smoothies or shakes, too. Just remember the body can't process more than 20-30g at a time. Ensure or similar are good because they have lots of calories and nutrients.
As far as blood transfusions go, ask the doctor what he suggests for everything. And tell him if you start using ensure or boost or whatever. Any time you add something new you should inform the medical team.
I make smoothies with spinach leaves and strawberry, blueberry, banana. Looks bad but they are smooth like a shake and the spinach has lots of nutrients. Blueberries are big cancer fighters, and strawberries and bananas are good for you and improve the taste. If she suffers from nausea, add a little tiny bit of fresh ginger root. And if she doesn't mind the taste, add a little kale for more nutrients.
