Topic: Just diagnosed this month

I've been feeling not myself for the last six months or so -- nausea with every meal, back pain, fatigue. Went to the ER in July and was sent home with pain meds. The pain escalated, finally landing me back in the ER at the beginning of December thinking my gallbladder was infected. An ultrasound of my gallbladder revealed it was fine. The docs were ready to send me home with more pain meds when the radiologist took another look and said my liver didn't look right. I have a 6.5 cm tumor pushing out the side of my liver like a balloon. A biopsy revealed it was CC, and a PET scan did not show any other locations (yay!). I am scheduled for resection on Jan. 8 at University of Chicago, followed by chemo. I'm 43, with a husband and a 6-year-old son, and no family history of this type of cancer. My father has had colon cancer twice, and it killed both of his parents, so I've been diligent in getting my colonoscopies (have one coming up Tuesday). This CC snuck in and after reading so many grim prognoses, I am scared.

Re: Just diagnosed this month

Tara,
Very understandable that you are scared to have this diagnosis. I am VERY happy to hear you are scheduled for surgery early January and know we are all very glad you have localized, resectable CC.  I am also grateful that the radiologist looked carefully at your scan and the ER staff did not just send you home with more pain meds.  Your story is so similar to my sister's (pain under right rib that would wake her up at night.. the Dr assumed gall bladder disease and ultrasound tech found it looked normal but then was extra diligent in looking more carefully at the liver.. ultrasounds are not very good but are the first line screening tool). Seems weird to be so excited for you about your resection surgery when in perspective I'm very sure you would rather have NO cancer and NO surgery, but you are fortunate as this surgery is the best possible treatment known for cc.  Healthy Blessings to you and let us know how we can help.

Re: Just diagnosed this month

Tara,

Sounds like they found your cancer relatively early and there cannot be better news than being able to have surgery. This cancer does sneak up on people for sure and most don't find out they have it till the latter stages when resection is not possible.

Fear turns into fight (as our Lainy always says) when you have a plan in place.  But for sure fear, sadness, and depression are part of this type of diagnosis.  Accept that some days it may be overwhelming, seek help when you need to, and be kind to yourself...this is a lot to go through.

Please feel free to email me if you have questions (randi.barrell@gmail.com).  I had surgery (a Whipple, with clean margins, no lymp node involvement) and chemo for 6 months afterward.  I just celebrated my 4 year CC cancer free anniversary  (along with my 19 years breast cancer and 14 year thyroid cancer-free-versary).

Re: Just diagnosed this month

Thanks to everyone for the kind wishes. Had some great news from the surgeon today who thinks taking my entire left lobe and gallbladder might get rid of ALL of the CC. Of course, we won't know until after pathology comes back after the surgery, but he said if we have no surprises in surgery, he's feeling very positive. smile

Re: Just diagnosed this month

Tara,
Best of luck, if you are on schedule, Wednesday is the day for you... It's funny, seems all of the surgeon's do these on Wednesday. Mine was 9/14/11 on a Wednesday. It does sound like you have a great prognosis and we're all praying that there isn't any lymph node involvement. As Lisa mentioned, feel free to reach out to all of us with any questions that you may have and again, best of luck!
