Topic: Seeking for a second opinion

This is my first post, although I have to admit that I have been reading your posts concerning different subjects for 6 months while I was searching for answers to my questions. It was very helpful to read from other people who are also concerned with CC, and who have very similar problems, and I am very grateful that this community exists.

I and my family are from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We know that my father has CC since June 2013. He had a liver resection in June 2013. The surgery went well, but unfortunately it relapsed, built metastasis on his lungs now, and seems to expand. Because of his liver cirrhosis and splenomegaly, his white blood counts are too low to be treated with chemotherapy. The doctor did not recommend chemotherapy because of high risks and low chances of success of the treatment, advising only palliative care.

Before we give up, we would like to get a second opinion of another specialist. And I thought if oncologists differ in what they know or what they are able, the best ones must be in the US. Could you please help me to find a specialist for CC to whom I could send the last CT scan report of my father to have a second opinion on it? I would also be grateful for any other advises you might be able to give me.

Finally, there is one thing I would like to share, although it might not be new for you. Having been confronted with cancer for the first time, I became aware of the book “The Emperor of all Maladies. A Biography of Cancer” by Siddhartha Mukherjee, and I just finished reading it. This is a wonderfully written, very informative book. It is a history of cancer research, and it gave me some ideas and hopes and the possibility to see this horrible thing befalling my father from a different angle.

Thank you so much.

Re: Seeking for a second opinion

Hi Lojoo,

Welcome to the forum.  I am very sorry to hear that your father has been affected by this disease but you have come to the right place for support and help.

I am not able to help on doctors in the US but I am sure that someone will be along very soon that can.

Re: Seeking for a second opinion

Dear Lojoo, welcome to our spectacular family but I am so sorry to read about your Father. A few of the top Hospitals here for CC are MDAnderson in Houston, NY Presbyterian in New York, John Hopkins and Sloan Kettering also Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. Forgot one biggie, Barnes Jewish Hospital in St, Louis MO (Dr. Chapman). I do believe you are our first family from Mongolia! I wish you a ton of success with these Hospitals you are a wonderful and your Father is lucky to have you advocating for him.

Re: Seeking for a second opinion

Dear Lojoo,

I'm so sorry to hear about your father's recent diagnosis.  For a second opinion, you might consider contacting Dr. Javle at the MD Anderson Center in Texas.  His email address is mjavle@mdanderson.org.  When I contacted him, he asked for a case summary of history, pathology and recent and old scans in a couple of pages, as this would be a great time-saving help.

Also, since it's closer, have you considered getting second opinions in South Korea?  I'm Korean and have family there, and they're supposed to be advanced in cancer medicine as well.  But for myself, I've been looking into alternative treatment options offered there for my mom (in fact, I was looking just this morning, so it's serendipitous that I came across your post now).  There's a place called BohyunDang Medical Clinic in particular that seems to emphasize a holistic approach to treating (and living with) cancer.  I'm not sure how non-Korean speakers could or would fare at the clinic, but you might want to contact them and see.  Their phone number is 02.501.8228, and the email address is webmaster@totalcancer.co.kr.

I love that you're recommending a book in your introduction.  Thank you.  I haven't read it yet but ordered it right away using smile.amazon.com (thank you, Jason!).

Hang in there, and let us know if you have any other questions.  I wish you and your dad the very best.

Re: Seeking for a second opinion

lojoo...I would like to follow the others in welcoming you to our site.  Are you located in Germany as is your father?
BTW:  I read the book as well - a fascinating journey in history of cancer.  Also, I am quite familiar with  Ulaanbaatar, my cousin lives there occasionally.

Re: Seeking for a second opinion

Thank you for your welcoming.

Sorry for this confusion with Germany. I am located in Germany at this given moment while I registered to this site. My family, including my father, lives in Mongolia.

I probably will contact MD Center for a second opinion.
