Topic: Introduction & Research Help Please

My husband of 15 years, Keith, passed away on January 23rd, 2014 after battling this cancer for 108 days.  He was 47 years old.

I am needing to reach out to anyone who might be able to direct me to any research studies that I can use show a link between Cholangiocarcinoma and:

-Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
-Cancers of the bladder, brain, cervix, colon esophagus, female breast, kidney, larynx, liver, lung, oral cavity, pancreas, prostate, rectum and soft tissue
-Hematopoietic cancers
-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
-Multiple myeloma
-Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
-Non-cancerous kidney diseases
-Non-cancerous liver diseases
-Multiple sclerosis

Keith was exposed to toxic chemicals when he was a Marine and stationed at Camp Lejeune.   It is now up to me to show a link between Keith's cancer and any of the diseases above.  This could me the difference between me receiving benefits due to his death or not.  And at 48 years old with a mortgage, losing one income is incredibly difficult.  So this could help my family out tremendously.

Any help/advice/or assistance is appreciated.

Thank you.

Snewland66 -
Welcome to our little family. Sorry you had to join us and so sorry you lost your husband to this awful disease.
I have not seen any specific link to those diseases. I know for my husband he had a history of Hodgkin's lymphoma as a child and they speculate that the radiation he received for that may have caused the cc but nothing definitive. He has a family history of colon cancer. Other than my husband's experience with both diseases I don't have an answer.
I know Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and some other liver infections such as hepatitis may predispose a person to cc. Also in SE Asia the eating of raw fish can lead to a parasitic liver infection with a liver fluke that increases the risk.
I am sorry I could not be of more help. I am sure others will chime and maybe someone can point you in a better direction. Good luck.

Re: Introduction & Research Help Please

Snewland, I am sorry to hear of your husbands passing.
I am not sure where you could find such info. I know Gavin posts many things about possible links in the new development section.
As KrisV said, there are some possible links from other diagnoses. River flukes, gall stones, among other things are possible links. As are chemicals in the printing industry, so I could see other chemicals possibly being a link. And colon cancer and cc are very close "cousins", according to my surgeon. There are those that say GI problems, hepatitis, and liver function problems can make one more predisposed to cc.  I also know the trial I am on targets head and neck cancers, colon cancer, and cc.
I wish I could help you more.

Glad you have found this site but sorry you are here because of Keith's passing.  I don't have much to add to what has already been said, but want you to know that you have my deepest sympathy for your loss .   Although nothing can take away the pain and sorrow of your loss, take  some comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering or in pain.  Keep him with you forever in your heart and memories.

Hoping that some of the others can be of some help with your questions.
