Announcing the Formation of the Houston CARE Team

The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) is pleased to announce the formation of the Houston CARE Team, a dedicated group of volunteers providing local support for patients with cholangiocarcinoma and caregivers through Advocacy, Research, and Education.  Comprised of passionate individuals with deeply personal connections to cholangiocarcinoma, this team aims to create a support network for patients, caregivers, and families in the Houston area.

Toni Pham: Turning Pain into Purpose

Toni Pham’s journey with CCF began in 2019 when she became a mentor and research advocate after losing her sister, Nicole, to cholangiocarcinoma. An advocate by trade, Toni relied on her advocacy and research skills to advocate for Nicole and navigate treatment options with a focus on clinical trials. Toni’s desire to give back by supporting others evolved into a passion for advocacy and a way to transform her grief into purpose.

“While serving as a research advocate allows me to lend my voice to critical research initiatives and clinical trial design, it is the one-on-one relationships from mentoring that I consider the highlight of my day,” Toni shared. Toni is particularly excited to bring her advocacy and research expertise to the Houston CARE Team, offering local support to fellow Houstonians.

Patty Maxin: A Journey of Support and Advocacy

Patty Maxin’s involvement with CCF is deeply rooted in her personal experience with cholangiocarcinoma. After losing her husband, Mike Lu, to the disease in 2015, Patty discovered the Foundation in 2017 and immediately felt drawn to its mission. Over the years, she has contributed to the organization in numerous ways, including managing the CholangioConnect mentorship program and serving on the Board of Directors.

“There is no greater honor than when someone allows you into their world while experiencing difficult times. It is the ultimate gift!” Patty said. She is genuinely excited to be part of the inaugural Houston CARE Team, recognizing the city’s unique role as both a home to many cholangiocarcinoma patients and a destination for others seeking treatment. “This program will provide a network of support, whether this is home for a patient or merely a stop in their treatment journey,” she added.

For Lytch Gutmann, joining the Houston CARE Team is a way to honor her mother, who was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in early 2023. Despite the challenges of the diagnosis, Lytch’s mother found solace in the resources and community provided by CCF.

Lytch Gutmann: Building Community and Connection

“Although she ultimately succumbed to her illness, knowing that she wasn’t alone in her fight was of tremendous comfort to her,” Lytch said. Lytch now serves as a caregiver mentor and is excited to extend her efforts to a local level through the Houston CARE Team.

Reflecting on her own experience, Lytch emphasized the importance of connection and shared understanding. “As a caregiver to my mom, I often felt overwhelmed and frustrated by the complexity of her diagnosis and care. It was tremendously helpful to hear stories from others who were having the same experience, and I found comfort in sharing my mom’s story.”

Through the Houston CARE Team, Lytch hopes to ensure that others affected by cholangiocarcinoma feel seen, heard, and understood. “We will work to empower individuals and create a sense of community that reminds everyone they’re never facing this fight by themselves.”
