Honoring Anjali Gottreich: A Night of Love, Legacy, and Community Impact
On December 5th, more than 150 friends, family members, and supporters gathered at Five & Dime in Evanston, IL, for a heartfelt evening honoring the life and legacy of Anjali Gottreich. Hosted by her daughters, Julia and Claire, the event brought together everyone who loved Anjali, as well as many who were touched by her story and wished to stand with the family in support of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF).
What unfolded was a night full of connection, remembrance, generosity, and collective purpose.
A Legacy of Love and Learning
Anjali passed away in November 2023 after a short but courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma. She was a devoted mother, a dedicated wife to Marc, and a friend who made everyone around her feel seen and cared for. One of her greatest joys was reading, and the stories she loved helped shape her curiosity, compassion, and ability to bring people together.
To honor this part of her life, guests were invited to bring a new or gently used book to donate to WITS Chicago, the largest provider of literacy enrichment programs in Chicago Public Schools. Dozens of books were collected, each one carrying forward Anjali’s spirit.
The family also introduced Anjali’s Book Club tote bags and hats, a special merchandise collection created just for the event. These items not only honored her love of reading but also helped raise additional funds for cholangiocarcinoma research and patient support programs.
A Night Filled with Powerful Voices
One of the most moving moments of the evening came when Julia and Claire took the stage to speak about their mother. They reflected on her kindness, her joy, her dedication to her friends and family, and the countless ways she shaped their lives.
The event also featured remarks from CCF Volunteer Cindy Dougherty-Mrotek, who shared her own experience of losing her mother to cholangiocarcinoma. Cindy spoke about the strength she found through the CCF community and the healing that comes from connection, understanding, and shared purpose.
An Impact That Will Carry Forward
Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, the event raised over $63,000 in support of the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation. These funds will directly fuel research, education, advocacy, and patient support programs that bring hope to families facing this rare cancer.
The success of the evening reflects not only the love people have for Anjali, but also the urgent need to invest in research and resources for cholangiocarcinoma, a disease that often goes unnoticed until it affects someone we love.
Continuing Anjali’s Legacy
Anjali’s quiet radiance will never fade, and the impact of this event ensures that her love, generosity, and passion for reading will continue to uplift others.
Thank you to the Gottreich family and the incredible community surrounding them for carrying Anjali’s legacy forward with such warmth, purpose, and heartfelt generosity.
